From Newsweek -- Dangerous Palin rally hatred...just what DUers suspected
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 12:20 PM by tex-wyo-dem
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/05/obama-we-cant-solve-globa_n_141358.html

Newsweek has released highlights of its Special Election Project, which allowed reporters to gather behind-the-scenes information on the presidential campaigns with an agreement that none of their reporting would be published until after Election Day.

<snip>

-- The Obama campaign was provided with reports from the Secret Service showing a sharp and very disturbing increase in threats to Obama in September and early October, at the same time that the crowds at Palin rallies became more frenzied. Michelle Obama was shaken by the vituperative crowds and the hot rhetoric from the GOP candidates. "Why would they try to make people hate us?" Michelle Obama said to a top campaign aide.

<snip>

No surprise here...it seems to me there must be some law against a candidate for office whipping up so much hatred against his/her opponent to cause an increase to the threats to said opponents life. Absolutely disgusting!

That's what I want to know. I also want to know what is planned to protect Obama supporters as well as people of color. What will law enforcement do?

7. Ah, thank you for the link! I was just gonna ask for it.
We ALL need to remain on guard.

We NEED this man. We NEED him in the White House, to work on our problems for us and work them out. We need him safe and healthy and unfettered so he can go to work for all of us. The job now facing him is utterly crushing.

This needs to be monitored carefully. I hope she hasn't started something, or unleashed something evil.

12. What I worry about is the right wing whack jobs on the radio/TV
continuing to fuel the whack jobs. We need to get on radion station managers and advertisers for the outrageous crap. How the hell can they justify it when we saw the mandate Obama got last night? And we know from KO's and Racel's ratings plus the rise of other talkers like Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Randi, etc that the crap they spout that liberal talk doesn't get ratings is pure BS!

Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 12:57 PM by RamboLiberal
Like he started last night. And he needs to apologize to John Lewis for his false outrage over the justified concern Lewis expressed.

While I celebrate I will have a nagging fear for Obama. I had the same for Clinton as the whack jobs ratcheted the hate daily.

8. Sarah Palin, from all indications (highlighted throughout the Newsweek article)...
is at her core a despicable human being...she obviously sees no boundaries in action or behavior to realizing her ambitions of power (think of Rove or Cheney in a skirt).

21. There was an article on Salon called "Mean Girl" about Palin
that showed her to be a real piece of work--and that's really the most polite way I can put it. She's stabbed people in the back and stepped on people to get what she wants for her entire career and then surrounded herself with longtime cronies and sycophants and fired anyone who dared disagree with her--just like Dubya.

27. maybe this will help its from the same newsweek article
On the night she officially lost the Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton enjoyed a long and friendly phone conversation with McCain. Clinton was actually on better terms with McCain than she was with Obama. Clinton and McCain had downed shots together on Senate junkets; they regarded each other as grizzled veterans of the political wars and shared a certain disdain for Obama as flashy and callow.

10. It's what we've become
The veneer of civilization in the US is very thin. You don't have to scratch very hard to get to the grain of violence underneath.

I've seen a lot of political campaigns -- on all levels. I don't think I've seen any as vile and despicable as the McCain/Palin one. It was a disgrace to democracy.

Anyone who voted for them should hang their head in shame.

17. And this is why Schmidt told Palin "hell, no" to her request to speak last night
McCain could barely keep his supporters muzzled when he praised Obama's victory. Palin would have gone completely rogue and not only dumped gasoline on the pile but she would have lit the match as well.

26. One thing has nothing to do with the other,. Schmidt said no bc Vp nominees do not give
concession speeches, period. Her request was inappropriate. And his loyalty is to McCain, not her sorry self. The hate she drummed up was part of McCain's campaign, though. It was not her idea. It was just like Biden getting a little rougher than Obama ever did. That is what the VP nominee does. They take the heat for the top candidate--and they take their marching orders from the top candidate and staff. If you think McCain was not thrilled with what she did while she was doing it, then I don't know what to say.

32. I agree with your statement that VP candidates typically...
get down in the dirt more than the POTUS candidate, but it doesn't sound like McCain had much control over the "maverick" Palin, not to mention, rarely spoke with her -- from the same article:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/05/obama-we-cant-solve-globa_n_141358.html

-- McCain himself rarely spoke to Palin during the campaign and aides kept him in the dark about the details of her spending on clothes because they were sure he would be offended. Palin asked to speak along with McCain at his Arizona concession speech but campaign strategist Steve Schmidt vetoed the request.

-- Palin launched her attack on Obama's association with William Ayers, the former Weather Underground bomber, before the campaign had finalized a plan to raise the issue. McCain's advisers were working on a strategy that they hoped to unveil the following week, but McCain had not signed off on it, and top adviser Mark Salter was resisting.

33. You talking abour the Newsweek revelations?
They have 2 chapters up today on the early days of the campaign in both the Obama and McCain camp. And will be releasing new chapters each day. Just go to their website.

It will be great reading all the revelations in the coming days. There has to be a couple of good books in there somewhere and I'll be keeping my eyes open for them.

Which goes to show us that John McCain is a far better man than the people who supported him. I really felt bad for him at that point.

35. really?
McCain stoked the fires of anti-Obama hatred over and over again during his campaign. It was directly from the top, not just from the supporters. Then he gives his CYA kiss-up concession speech, saying all the right things, and all of a sudden he's a better man than his supporters?

He had many opportunities to see the effects of his attacks, and to quell them, during the campaign, but he kept pushing them, even after it escalated to threats on Obama's life. He never went out to his followers to make any kind of serious correction of this raging fire he had started, he instead hoped to benefit from it.

Even after it was clear he would lose, he escalated this type of campaign, knowing that it would only serve to damage and endanger the soon-to-be president elect. At some point you really do have to put country first, and he didn't.

Disgusting. Vile. Dangerous. I have no sympathy for McCain, quite the opposite. Those boos you speak of were his own attacks echoing across this nation from the mouths of his supporters.

37. The report suggests that McCain was trying to avoid dirty campaigning:

McCain also was reluctant to use Obama's incendiary pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright as a campaign issue. He had set firm boundaries: no Jeremiah Wright; no attacking Michelle Obama; no attacking Obama for not serving in the military. McCain balked at an ad using images of children that suggested that Obama might not protect them from terrorism; Schmidt vetoed ads suggesting that Obama was soft on crime (no Willie Hortons); and before word even got to McCain, Schmidt and Salter scuttled a "celebrity" ad of Obama dancing with talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres (the sight of a black man dancing with a lesbian was deemed too provocative).
