John Kerry has two tasks; convincing people he has a serious interest in blowing up terrorists and laying out specific economic proposals. One can protest that he has "done" those things but the only sensible measure of the doing is whether the average person thinks Kerry has done those things. (They don't)
Campaign bullshit about the "media filter" is defeatist whining. It is the candidate's job to get his message heard. No excuses. If you say something and it doesn't get through then you say it again, and again and again... no matter what.
In the tables below from the Registered voter sample of the new CBS poll I have highlighted the responses of independents. They say Kerry has been more negative than Bush. It's an empirical fact that Bush has run the most negative campaign in history and every independent in this sample has seen twice as many negative Bush ads. But politics is 100% perception and 0% empiricism, and their perception is that Kerry is more negative.
And that's just what it is. The environment is not optional.... it does no good to lose in November and then say, "yeah, but our strategy would have worked real well on Jupiter." Yes, these voters are ignorant hateful assholes. They really are... they're the scum of the Earth. So what else is new? (If you don't want your fate decided by the scum of the Earth then Democracy just isn't your bag.)
With only 55 days to go Kerry is 100% of the campaign. Edwards and Teressa are liabilities. The media is hostile. I doubt that in all of human history so much has ever ridden on one man. He may emerge a savior or condemn our once great nation to a future of fascism, theocracy and civil war. As Jason Robards (as Ben Bradlee) says in ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, "there's not much riding on this. Just the First Amendment and the Constitution of the United States."
I think Kerry will get it done despite all the help he's getting. It will require some gambles along the way and unprecedented grassroots commitment, but I'm optimistic. I really am.
