I thought I'd feel like gloating. I don't.

Part of it is Obama's splendid speech last night. It was humbling. Part of is that Prop 8 won in CA and its twin won in FL. Yes, I'm thrilled with most of what happened last night; I'm glad the rethugs suffered such a resounding defeat, but surprisngly- at least for the moment- I could care less about gloating.

2. I can gloat and mourn at the same time

Not only were gays screwed in CA, but my state retains Bachmann. Coleman's status remains in doubt.

But what else is new? Life can be counted on to bring both good and bad at all times, often at once, and if you can't appreciate the enormous good and shout our outrageous, triumphant, historic, monumental landslide victory from every roofing tile then I'll do it for you, and mourn you a little in the process for not feeling up to doing so. Any and all progressives deserve their gloating time, just as any and all progressives need their mourning time for prop 8 and other disappointing outcomes. Feel both keenly, but at least feel both!

5. it's enough for me to feel overjoyed about Obama's win

and proud of the electorate in state after state. Just because I say I don't feel like gloating, doesn't mean I don't feel like shouting from the rooftops or setting off fireworks. (I did the latter, though not the former).

7. If there were ever a reason to gloat, it is this presidential victory

We transcended the political bludgeon of fear. We transcended the "identity politics" demagoguery of Palin and Joe the Plumber. We transcended "trickle down" Reaganomics. We transcended voter caging and countless electoral manipulations in OH and CO. We defeated the GOP and gained larger majorities in Congress. We ensured Justice Stevens's delayed retirement was not in vain.

If you're not the sort of person who likes to gloat in any circumstance, I can understand. Otherwise, if you can't at least gloat a little for all of the above, your standards for gloating seem prohibitively high.

4. I want the healing to begin for ALL Americans

WE have much to do and little time to do some of it, global warming, economy, healthcare.....etc. WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER and what WE must achieve may be more difficult thanks to the McKKKain/Failin hate campaign, but WE must all find away to reach out and move this country forward. I'm thrilled to have the chance to support President Obama, for the good of the country and will do so without overly expressing my enthusiasm to those who still harbor ill will and outright racism. I hope in time they will see that he's not a threat or the boogey man, but a TRUE leader for us all.

President Obama, lead our Nation out of this mess and bring ALL of us together in support of your efforts. You can do it! Are you fired up? We are!

8. I just feel happy

I admit I shed a tear or two when they called it for Obama around 11pm. But today I just feel a sense of satisfaction and a restored faith in my country.
