One of the vivid examples of the Bush years for me was the flying of the U.S. Flag after the attacks. 80% of the houses flew the flag on my street. I went out and bought a high end Malibu spot light to make sure it was properly lit, had to pull out the ladder to untangle it a few times but it felt good.
Those feelings didn't seem to last too long, I think less than a month. Mine came down after the run up to the war with Iran. When Bush made the statements that we were either with him or supported the terrorists (paraphrasing) it hurt but I blew it off. When friends and coworkers made similar comments that lead me to pulling down the flag. I noticed a few others came down about the time mine did, and then after a few months all were gone except for one. Sure mine and others went up for 4th of July, but that was about it. Each time I pulled the flag down I remembered the feelings, the pain, of taking down the flag during the winter of 2001.
So today I went out and got a new flag, and at 10:00 PM Pacific time I hung that bright new flag up. The porch light and street light will have to suffice for illumination tonight, tomorrow I can get the new Malibu spot light. That flag is going to fly until January 20th at a minimum and it is going to feel damn good to see it every day.
