Coming into work this morning, I passed three different polling places, from about 7:00-7:15am. All three were more than overflowing with lines going around the block, and in some places doubling up. Parking on all of the side streets was jammed, and people were walking in from blocks aways.
I don't remember lines this long this early in 2004. I voted in the evening then (as I will again this year) and I stood in line for almost 2 hours. I'm expecting a longer wait today, and have already picked out a book to bring with me. I doubt I will read much, because these lines generally start getting a party atmosphere after awhile. We are a heavily blue area and everyone votes. I know there isn't much chance of Maryland ever going red, but I still love to see the commitment and dedication of my neighbors.
My favorite scene this morning was a father who was walking up with his 4(ish) son. He was pointing out Obama signs to the kid and clearly using this as a teaching moment. Having been that kid 20-some years ago, I thought it was cool to see that people still do that.
