Thank you, Martin Heldt (Iowa farmer who originated AWOL story)
Marty Heldt, an Iowa farmer, was the first one to seek George W. Bush's military records through FOIA. A dogged citizen researcher, he was able to start the ball rolling on what today has finally reached culmination.

Thanks to Marty, the world now knows George W. Bush was absent from his military post in wartime, and lied about it.

You'll always be my hero, Marty!

6. Born in Iowa.
One thing I can tell you is the folks I knew, including my parents, worked their asses off to offer their kids the best education they could. Guys like this are the product of that effort.

8. Me too, Iowa girl through and through. Even here in Tennessee
I grew believing strongly in education, I think all Iowans do, and I just can't relate to Tennessee and the state's educationsl system.

11. Let Me Throw In My Thanks As Well
I remember reading Marty's posts in 2000...and then saw him appear here on DU several months back.

He's the man who did the hard digging that now is the basis for the entire Bunnypants AWOL story and did so at tremendous risk and personal sacrifice.

It's people like Marty who renews one faith in the power of the truth over the power of greed.

12. There was a story about blacks being overwhelmingly and unfairly
prosecuted in a town in Texas.

It was a white gentleman, a farmer, who noticed the trend, and the inequities.

He dug, dug, and dug, and with some help from the local black population, finally got the problem in the public, resulting in most of the illegal convictions being overturned.

The Internet is here to stay.

Both these cases wouldn't have been resolved without it.

Thank you, Al Gore!!!

14. Remember Marty from the SalonTT board - thanks Marty!
Thanks Marty! You really did so much and it seems to be paying off four years later! (Seems like the press really had to get an eyeful of Bush before they would tell whole the story.)

16. And let's not forget the people who got the story into the mainstream
Edited on Thu Sep-09-04 08:24 AM by rocknation
though not necessarily intentionally...

If Peter Jennings hadn't tried to embarrass Wesley Clark by asking if it was appropriate of Michael Moore to call Bush a deserter, this story would STILL be under the radar!
