2. Did he actually have even 24 hours of combat flying?
I don't remember the number of hours, but was surprised how few it was. My father flew 50 missions over Germany, Africa and Italy in WW11 and never considered himself a hero. I think he felt a degree of guilt for the harm he caused to innocents.
