23. First Circle and Travels for me ... at least for PMG
...Though "Its Just Talk" from Still Life ranks very highly amongst my favorite tunes.

And "We Live Here" is definitely underrated. The breakout tune from that one was the one Lyle Mays wrote, "Episode D'Azur". Killer groove and swings like mad.

Also did some steller guitar work on Michael Brecker's "Pilgrimage" CD released not long ago.

Pat is truly a guitar genius.

14. Here's one.
I have been following Pat's career since the first Pat Metheny Group album.
He has a place here near Woodstock, NY, and often times does benefits with Jack DeJohnette, and a bass player. I have seen them play in the tiny Bearsville Theater several times. The place holds at most 200. The shows sell out in short order, and the shows themselves are phenomenal. Christian McBride was the bassist at a benefit last month, and it was great. They played for three hours, and did things that one had to experience, to believe that it was a three piece band.

Pat has traveled the world on tour with his group, so he has a good view of the people of this planet.

Just go to his website, http://www.patmethenygroup.com , look at "Pat Recommends" and you will get a good picture of his views. If he's not a Liberal, than my name is Fidel Castro.

Pat, as most jazz musicians that I have known, is an ultra-Liberal. It's no surprise to me. They are often far ahead of the curve when it comes to the musical part of our culture, why not the political part as well.

16. Ok I am going to make you all jealous ...
I met Pat Metheny Back stage ... I befriended a student of Antonio Sanchez ( drummer for the past few years) and he took me backstage at the Monmouth University in NJ..

I got autographs from him, Anotonio Sanchez and Christian McBride .. I also noticed how 'beat-up' his Roland GR-300 guitar synthesizer was .. I guess he tours for about 200 days in year.

can play so cleanly AND so fast! We saw that trio twice. Loved it!

24. The Trio is a much better 'Live' Experience .. very intimate compared to his full PMG ensemble
as there is lot more spontaneous playing ... and more room for improvisation ( or so I have heard) as Pat is very very finicky about how the band sounds overall.

20. Huge Metheny (and jazz) fan here!!!
In fact, it was Metheny's live album called The Road To You which actually led to me becoming a Jazz nut. Metheny led me Herbie Hancock, who led me to Miles ... the rest is history!!!

Favorite Metheny is still Bright Size Life. Straight ahead swinging with that folksy feel!

21. The song Last Train Home was playing as I drove into Charlotte County
one night about 18 years ago...

I had been driving all night from Cleveland to try and get to Punta Gorda as quick as I could...

I was going to the hospital to try and say good bye to my mom...

I stopped the car and cried like a baby...

25. Not shocked

A couple other lesser known jazz players I like are also very progressive minded. Jazz by its nature is 'conservative' in that it seeks to maintain a purity (that's why many jazz players scoff at fushion)...but the breathtaking creativity and improvisation of these brilliant musicians lend themselves to a mind that is still quite open.

I have heard countless jazz players over the years, and I am a big fan of Coltrane, Camillo, and Dimeola (I love jazz guitar so Al is in there), but Pat Metheny's music speaks to me like no other. For my money, he's the best who lives.

27. ...and not just as player, as a composer too.
I am convinced that some of Pat's tunes will remain in the Jazz lexicon and eventually become "standards".

As I am, If I Could, Missouri Uncompromised, Hermitage, Extradition ...

so many great Metheny tunes.

30. Oh yea...His compositions

Are what get it...someone else could play the music he writes and it would still be awe-inspiring. The fact he writes and plays it tells the tell.

I like so much of his work, but him with just a single baritone guitar on "One Quiet Night" was beyond genius. I think when Pat started doing that album he just hit the recorder and started playing with no pre-conceived notions in mind, and the results can only be described as spiritual.

His music actually takes the listener on a journey...he talks without any vocals. The guy is by far my favorite guitar player ever, right ahead of Carlos Santana, Alex Skolnick and Al DiMeola.

28. For those (like me) that need a visual...

I've seen Pat a few times and each show is a wonder.

I was at a show at Red Rocks outside of Denver when he was touring with the PMG for the "OFFRAMP" album.
What a experience.
I loved that brief time when he had Nana Vasconsuelious (sic) playing percussion and doing those haunting vocals.
