OK, I'm just back from Spain. What did I miss?
I had spotty access to CNN for the past week and a half. Ditto the Int'l Herald Tribune. When I got out of the Basque country and the Pyrennees I did get one British channel (not BBC) that announced that Obama was exhausted and blew up at a film crew outside his house. They said he "stumbled." WTF?

Now I tune into Morning Joe and they're all talking landslide. As usual, Chuckie T is giving Joe the big, bad news. I think Joe has resigned himself. Mika is the same as when I left, just a mute idiot.

Oh, but there was Peggy Noonan BSing on GMA about some undecideds -- I don't know what the hell she was blathering about.

I did hear about Obama's aunt but not much more in the way of news...

What do I need to know as a DU-deprived person?

5. the "blow up" is referring to Halloween night I think....
He was trying to take his youngest trick-or-treating and the media wouldn't get out of his face. From what I understand it wasn't his usual media gaggle, but actual paparazzi. I wouldn't say he "blew up" though...just told them that "that's enough"...the usual protective good daddy thing.

8. A non-English speaking film crew didn't understand the terms
Which were take a Halloween picture and get back on the bus so I can walk with my kids in peace. Obama reacted, but not nearly as angrily as publicized. It was one of those bright shiny object things. I hope you enjoyed your trip.

10. Oh, that's what it was?
Funny how these cultural differences play out! Altho I do suspect the Brits know our Halloween traditions very well but just wanted to "hype" this story.

The Herald Tribune was, should we say, a bit more in depth, but not much. There was a lot more international stuff, as you might imagine! A whole different perspective from our usual USA focused stuff. It was very interesting...and humbling, at least for me...

13. You didn't miss much but if you had known
you might have gotten the head of Spain's government to call Sarah Palin. She's all cozy with world leaders now.

17. I think Zapatero doesn't want to cause another international incident.
One was enough, with McCain effing up that question about the prime minister of Spain being invited to the WH. If McCain was that clueless, what could we expect of Palin?

I know you are kidding, but seriously doncha just know Western Europe's leaders are being very cautious right now. PLUS, of course, they have enough of their own problems to deal with. For instance, ETA set off a bomb in Pamplona (at the University of Navarro) the day after I was there. It's not ETA's usual style which is to target one individual. 16 people were injured in this latest blast.

20. Speaking of "no paseran," I noticed a LOT of discussion about the Spanish Civil War all over places
I visited (I'm now reading "Homage to Catalonia"). This was a Smithsonian art and architecture program and much was said about the War's influence on modern Spanish art (not just "Guernica"). I was in Madrid, Bilbao, Pamplona and Barcelona. Quite an interesting experience...

21. Homage to Catalonia is, I think, one of Orwell;s best books
I think it explains a lot about his development as an anti-authoritarian leftist, not a particuarly popular stance at the time.

22. I read somewhere that Orwell thought that Gaudi's La Sagrada Familia
church was the ugliest piece of architecture he ever saw!

It is a little bit unusual...

16. Three friends in Madrid (Corazon de Maria) will be hosting an all-nighter
tomorrow at 11 PM (Spain time) awaiting Obama's victory. They tell me that in Spain they are rooting for Obama thinking that it will bring good relations with the government (in Spain they love the American people, they do not like Bush and his government). Same with my cousins in Calpe and Alicante. Viva Obama!!

19. You Should Have Watched TVE News
If you speak Spanish you would have seen up to the minute news about the election. I watch Spanish News everyday to get some truth about what is going on in the U.S.
