WHAT I LEARNED AT THE SARAH PALIN RALLY BEFORE THEY THREW ME OUT!

by Linda Milazzo

On Saturday I went to Carson, California, to attend a rally for Republican Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin. For those who aren’t familiar with the city of Carson, it’s approximately 19 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. In the 2004 Presidential election, Carson, which had a population of just under 90,000, donated three times as much money to George W. Bush than to John Kerry. This year, for the 2008 elections, residents of Carson have given slightly more to Republican candidates than to Democrats by a slim margin of $3,000. Thus the gap between Republicans and Democrats in Carson has narrowed. The Palin rally, which you may have seen on youtube and TV, was held at the Home Depot ADT Tennis Stadium.

Because of the surprising popularity of Mrs. Palin and easy access to free tickets, all 20,000 stadium seats, plus an overflow area were filled. I got a handful of tickets, recruited my friend Rebecca Tobias, Program Director of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Ethics, and trekked on out to Carson. We scored ground level seats in the stadium from which I watched, listened and steadily bristled. When I could no longer stomach Palin’s lies and distortions, I jumped up, and at the top of my lungs, repeatedly called Palin a L-I-A-R! I was shouted down in Palinese by her 20,000 admirers, then escorted out by security. I took extra time as I climbed the steps from the ground up to the top just to keep her admirers shouting. The few minute reprieve from Palin’s lies was to me a righteous diversion. When I neared the top of the steps I turned back to Mrs. Palin and continued to call her a L-I-A-R, until I was ushered out the door.

Thankfully my escorts showed me the utmost respect for they privately shared my feelings. They’re working folk. They see through Mrs. Palin. But that’s just the start of this story… You see, I’d gone to this event for a reason. Not to see Sarah Palin. I already knew who she was. I went to see the Palinettes - the supporters of this unspectacular woman who had so readily been won over. I wanted to meet them and speak with them and understand their attachment to this lowest common denominator politician - a woman so unqualified for Vice President that her appointer running mate should be imprisoned for treason. As a patriot and voter, I disagree categorically with the choice of Sarah Palin.

I seek knowledge, experience, maturity, integrity, charity, clarity, humanity, intellectual curiosity, and wisdom from the leaders I select. Since Palin, in my opinion, exhibits none of these traits, I wanted to assess her supporters’ rationale (or rational-ity). What I witnessed was thoroughly alarming!! Among this raptured crowd of 20,000 was a frightening mix of Christian zealots, anti-abortion fanatics, and mostly white suburban women and men reconnecting with their high school mentality. Bright colored pom-poms were everywhere - as if Sarah Palin were head cheerleader, the women were on her squad, and the men were the football heroes. Sarah Palin, the quintessential 4ever-school-girl had revitalized their youth and saved them from adulthood. Check out the red pom-pom “hair” on the man behind Palin. If that isn’t high school, what is??

49. Large Filipino population in Carson
Although the demographics are shifting in Carson, Filipinos by and large traditionally support Repukes - which is why past donations from Carson residents to Bush and his party were much higher than for us.

I live on the Palos Verdes Penn ~~ and I am familiar with Carson. I thought, tho, that the oil industry was based more in Willmington. I have only lived in South Bay a few years, so maybe I am not that familiar with the area.

Sounds like you have been here a long time. LOL, I am waaaaaaaaaaaaay too old to ride a pony ANYWHERE! I am really enjoying living here ~~ great climate. Even today with the rain ~~ it is very refreshing!

It was a nice place to work.

There are many African American families that live there as well.

Many Asians and I'm sure Hispanics there now too.

I wonder how that affects the Rethug vote there now?

13. The walking dead. (Now everyone is seeing.)
I grew up in the Bay Area of San Francisco when there were still dairy farms and fields. The subdivisions were just springing up. The walnut trees were just being killed. It seems a devolution occurred. The same phenomenon was in it's infant stages. I'm just going to leave it at that. No need for a novel here. I'll just say that once I had a friend tell me it was the land of the dead. Another, who was not American, told me they were car crazy.

It's obvious to me what has happened. Now after forty years, and having come to full fruition, I see two things that can happen. Either they can take over, as they have in the last eight years, or something will waken them. I guess there's another. And if we don't find an alarm clock, it may just happen. And it's not necissarily Obama. I'm talking about the results of all of the consumption. A much bigger problem than political representation. Now that the fields are paved, and the cars roam day and night over every square inch of the once fertile planet...

Its just because of how many people total that it always goes blue, but there are alot of republicans all over also.

Even in the bay area. Right before we retired to WA we rented in Walnut Creek the last 1 1/2 yrs and that was during the Kerry campaign..I will never forget all these rich cheer leader type girls out in the streets passing out flyers right before the election for Bush, they were across the street from Tiffany's.

My group handed out stuff at all the Bart stops. I bet they are out there this time too.

29. So let me get this straight...
So let me get this straight... you wanted to assess her supporters’ rationale (or rational-ity), and you did that by... screaming LIAR at the top of your lungs until you were escorted out by security?

I've already voted for Obama, but I honestly don't think this kind of "support" helps him.

Ask yourself what you would think you saw someone dragged out of an Obama rally for shouting LIAR repeatedly? Would you be likely to reconsider your viewpoint?

the person started yelling "Liar" after she had seen enough. I've seen people asked to leave an Obama rally..there was a group of African Americans who shouted him down at the beginning of a couple of rallies. They got their point across. What's the big deal?

30. why is palin wasting GOP $ & time in california?
she should have just got really high & laughed at the absurdity of it all - maybe asked questions of the people around her - just keep asking till they run out of rationales. it's easy since their real reason is self-centered fear.

obama will steamroll palin in 2012.

I had a similar reaction when I joined, right before the 2004 election. I now get most of my news from here. The MSM (mainstream media) does a terrible job actually informing the populace about the issues that affect us as a nation. We have a duty to pay attention to politics in order to have a functioning democracy. Glad you're with us.

The United States is a LIBERAL Country.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Latino and Filipino numbers were nearly reversed from where they are now. Filipinos usually favor the GOP. But the rally was designed as a regional fund-raiser, getting the Palos Verdes Repukes, and Orange County contingent in there. So I wouldn't say the rally was just for Carson by any stretch.
