OMG, my inlaws in GA are voting for Obama!
Edited on Fri Oct-31-08 09:21 AM by Jersey Devil
My brother in law and sister in law in Georgia and their two sons are voting for Obama. NJ transplants (of about 20 years) they live in Marietta in a lily white area of Marietta outside of Atlanta, are Republicans, my bro in law a bigshot in the Knights of Columbus, voted for Bush twice. One of his sons even ran for state legislature a few years back as a Libertarian and even he is voting for Obama.

The reason? Their business (small business manufacturing and supplying pasta to local restaurants and stores) has gone down the tubes under Bush and they don't see McCain making things any better economically.

To give you an idea of how conservative this area is I attended a barbecue at their house once in which the primary discussion among the neighborhood men was whether their neighborhood should try to secede from Marietta in order to keep black people from taking over their government and schools. Their congressional representative used to be Newt Gingrich.

So my bro in law (and his family), "Joe the Spaghetti Maker", is voting for Obama.

Wow!

It's a shame though, that economy had to go straight down the crapper before people woke up enough, isn't it?

2. Good luck in NC
My daughter and her family lived down there in Goldsboro for a year or so while my son in law was undergoing flight training for the Air Force. Nice country but it is mind boggling to me that it might go blue.

10. Heh. Not in THESE burbs of Atlanta.
I'm W/SW of Marietta, and this area's going blue. Donations here for Obama are running around 70%, last time I checked. In 2004, it was completely the opposite. We see Obama stickers and signs much more frequently than McCain. This used to be Bob Barr country, but things have really changed a lot in the last four years.

4. Why does this piss me off?
Because essentially that does not mean these people have changed for the better. No. They're just concerned about their sorry asses and still don't care about their fellow man (woman). But hit them in their pocketbook. Well! Can't have that! I don't think people like this should be praised. Not that that is what you are doing. A vote is a vote is a vote. Just that the reason sucks.

6. As the old saying goes, "Any port in a storm"
I know what you mean but I'll gladly take their votes.

I don't think my inlaws are "wingnuts". They'd probably fit under the old "moderate Republican" definition, liberal on social issues, conservative on economic issues, which is typical of NJ Republicans (which they used to be).

8. Racism is a luxury they can no longer afford. There are lots of stories like this.
Good for them, and good for America. Thanks for sharing the story.

The United States is a LIBERAL Country.
