From now on, if any acquaintance of mine that I come across in the future tells me that they like Sarah Palin, that's it, I'm finished with them. I've put up with enough Republican or Independent acquaintances in the past for long enough, but if they like Palin, then that tells me all I need to know about them in an instant.

"Hi, do you like Sarah Palin at all?"

"Well yes, I think she's fine and dandy."

"Get the FUCK out of my life, RIGHT NOW!!"

2. LOL
My dear beloved right wing mother called me the day after Palin was announced as McCain's running mate and asked me with exuberance, "What do you think of Sarah Palin? She's a feminist and likes guns JUST LIKE YOU!?!" :wtf: My jaw almost dropped to the floor. Although my mother is well aware that I'm a pinko liberal commie since high school, she genuinely believed that the fact that I would vote for Palin because we both were career women and liked guns?!?

You want to know emotional pain? Come back to Phoenix, AZ or rural South Dakota for some of our family reunions? :scared: We're talking FAR right wing, kool-aid drinking family. All but my nephew (8 years younger than me) and I. :(

9. So true, on a silly superficial level, I feel like I'm "behind enemy lines"

when I mix with family. You know, family is "forever" and so I try like hell not to talk politics.

Truth is, some within my family are great people, they'd be there for me if called them in need. Unfortunately, they settled on a rigid ideology and they will not change. EVER! Well, seemingly ever.

10. Yikes, that's gotta be hard
to have nice family get togethers. I got together with most of my family last weekend, and all of us are diehard Democrats, with the exception of one relative who is as rightwing racist as it gets.

13. The key is to not visit often, then I can be hardy enough to change the subject
away from politics before I lose my temper. Well, most of the time.

Glad that Phoenix, Arizona has the progressive station KPHX. While my mom has on FOX cable news WELDED - locked in on the main TV, I tote a portable radio and headphones.

Yes, it's not ideal but I know I was not adopted - just a freak. :(

12. I know those reunions! Every time there is a gathering of in laws
my wife has briefings with me for the whole week preceding the event: "If anyone says anything to you concerning religion or politics, please walk away."

14. LOL, it's my husband who is a valium poster child.
He is a democrat but also a retired Marine. Some of our more distant nutty cousins ASSUME that because my husband's a retired military, he's even more right wing than they are. But my husband always responds by ASKING THEM what they think and as they go off on a tirade, he smiles and looks interested, nods at all the appropriate places and SAYS NOTHING. My beloved hubby has "a gift" of being able to emotionally go off-line as people go nuts around him. He's a keeper. :-)

3. You're right. I totally agree.
Why waste your time? What's to be gotten out of relationships with people who who think this way. I don't care what people say--there ain't no common ground.

6. And another thing. People say, "Well, we just don't talk about politics."
Edited on Fri Oct-31-08 09:15 AM by 143tbone
Therefore there's absolutely no depth to that relationship because politics is life, is who you are, how you feel towards others. So if you don't talk about it, it's got to be a pretty shallow relationship and so why bother.

in both your posts.

There is just nothing to be gotten when you have zero in common, as far as values are concerned.

5. I spotted a bumper sticker that floored me,
in the parking lot of one of our local high schools,

( it was on a parent's car)

' I Am Sara Palin' !!

I almost gagged!

Since I was there as an employee on school business, I really
couldn't make a big whoop about it.

But apparently my facial expression said it all, as several
students who saw my reaction started cracking up.

:)

16. LOL! Great idea. That cuts to the chase right away. No 'effin around.
If they think she's swell, you know they have absolutely nothing in common with you. You know they are brainless and mean spirited. Who the hell needs 'em? You don't. Neither do I.
