El Paso man who leapt to his death left note for Obama
Associated Press

EL PASO — A 52-year-old man who leapt to his death from a freeway overpass left a note asking for Barack Obama to help his family.

El Paso police officer Chris Mears said the man, whose name has not been released, jumped from an overpass onto westbound Interstate 10 shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday. In his car, abandoned nearby, the man left a typewritten note on legal size paper on his dashboard and another attached to a rear window. Both were one-line notes asking for the Illinois senator and Democratic presidential candidate to help his family, Mears said.

Mears said the notes did not include any details about what kind of help the man wanted or what may have prompted him to jump to his death Thursday morning.

1. How very sad, that he felt he no other way to handle his problems.
Details about his life will no doubt be forthcoming.

Safe passage to him...

My deepest condolences to his family and all who loved him...

9. Possibly financial ruin?
I know that I was at the point of ruin and couldn't get out of it, there is always that life insurance policy my wife could use. Not saying I would do it, but it would be contemplated.

5. How sad. I wish someone had intervened, but unfortunately
many people are unaware of the risks and signs of serious depression--or are unable to get adequate treatment.

11. Wow. That makes me as angry as it does sad.
The Republicans have no clue how much this country is suffering.

12. I don't know what to say either, but it raises some larger questions.
I fear there are those who are pinning so many hopes on Obama that in some cases it may be unhealthy, whether or not he wins. I hope that suicides don't spike if Obama loses, but I would not be surprised if there were an increase in first-time appointments for psychologists and psychiatrists if McCain pulls this one out.

This man most certainly had been in severe pain for a long, long time. He may also have been in therapy or on medication which didn't provide him any relief. He may have decided his plan impulsively, and knew that those who commit suicide by jumping usually finish the job the first time.

I'm not sure what to make of his brief, vague request for help from Barack Obama.

Very, very sad. I am a suicide survivor, and so I understand this is a grief like no other. My heart goes out to his family.
