Next on the Sen Stevens' List? I Smell A Pardon.... LINK
The unprecedented act of asking the Executive Branch to intervene in a Judicial trial and post conviction process seems almost routine when you consider the depths to which the Corrupt Republican Defendants' Club has reached. Here Sen Stevens counsel has appealed directly to Mukasey at the DOJ to investigate the prosecution team, and remove them from any further participation in the legal process that resulted in his jury trial convictions.

It certainly is not beyond the imagination that the Stevens' Legal Team would already be planning for a Bush Pardon. THe only question would seem to be whether they will wait until Bush is about to leave office to ask for it.

"In the letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, Sullivan asked that immediate steps be taken to preserve all Justice Department information related to its investigation and prosecution of Stevens. He also asked Mukasey to pull the prosecution team from any further involvement with the case.
"We believe that an impartial investigator looking at this case with an eye toward the administration of justice would be shocked at the conduct of this prosecution team," the letter says.

The attorney alleges in the request that prosecutors knowingly presented false evidence to the jury in Washington, which found Stevens guilty Monday of seven felony counts.

"Senator Stevens' trial was irretrievably tainted by the prosecution team's zeal to convict a high-profile but innocent defendant," the letter says.

The letter was delivered to the attorney general Tuesday morning. Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd said the department would have no comment. Sullivan's office did not respond to an e-mail requesting comment."

2. This is ridiculous
Yes, mistakes were made by the prosecution, but the judge did everything right, including the exclusion of certain evidence. Ted Stevens is lucky he only got convicted of failure to report gifts. So much damaging information came out during the trial, I'll be surprised if new charges aren't brought.

3. They are trying to sidestep the Judicial Administration of the trial and post conviction process...
The Trial Judge and the respective State Bar has within their authorities the power to discipline and remove any lawyer(s) who fail to adhere to the rules of professional conduct, and to take corrective action to remedy any actions deemed prejudicial to the parties involved.

OF course the only way to read this is that the Stevens trial team is trying to move the charges out of the control of the Judicial Branch and into the hands of friendly Executive Branch officials for the purpose of obtaining a different result and consequences than that resulting from the recent trial and convictions.

The thought of openly and publicly trying to circumvent the judicial process is astounding. I hope the trial judge keeps this in mind when he fashions an appropriate judgment for Sen Stevens.
