Joe Wurzelbacher -- the plumber whose question prompted Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama to talk about the need to "spread the wealth" -- suddenly appeared onstage with GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin this morning at Bowling Green State University's Anderson Arena.
The crowd erupted into an enormous cheer when Palin introduced Wurzelbacher, who appeared in a button-down, green-checked shirt and jeans. Modifying a line she's used at many rallies to describe her favorite kind of voter, the Alaska governor said that after seeing photos of the plumber, "I knew I'd like him, wearing his Carhartts and his steel-toed boots."
Wurzelbacher did not speak during the rally, and instead stood with his hands clasped together. But Palin continued to address him in front of the enthusiastic audience as he stood silently by her side. "Joe, I really want to hand it to you, you were able to get our opponent to finally state his intentions in plain language," she said.
"Joe Biden calls higher taxes patriotic" -- here the crowd booed loudly -- "but to some, it has sounded like socialism," Palin said, alluding to a comment Wurzelbacher made earlier in the campaign. "Now is not the time to experiment with that."
