Sinese, Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford (supporting Obama this time, though), Norman Lear, Michael Douglas, Berry Gordy, Quincy Jones, Dean Cain,Pat Boone, Dean Zucker (Airplane!, Naked Gun), Jon Voight, Lou Ferrigno, Adam Corolla, Jon Cryer, Connie Stevens, Ben Stein, Rip Torn, Dick Van Patten, Kelsey Grammer Jerry Bruckheimer and a bunch of other producers and studio heads or owners, --all have contributed to or otherwise supported McCain in this election and/or past elections And I have not even looked for country music folk.

Yes, Democrats get support from more show business types than do Republicans.. These are, after all, smart creative people for the most part. But show business is not a monolith.

The myth that show business supports only Democrats is indeed just another Pub myth. The Party of fairy tales.

On edit: Removed Annette Benning and Warren Beatty. They seem to be Dem.

20. My post was not confined to this election, but I think Benning and Beatty are loyal. I have several
sources. Here is one. http://www.newsmeat.com/2008a-list.php (You have to choose a filter.) But, sometimes, it is just what people say when they talk to talk show hosts, lke Leno or Letterman. Heaton, for example, is always whining on talk shows about how rough it is to be Republican in Hollywood. BTW, Leno is a con.

$41,450 Democrat

That was part of it, and I think some of them were genuinely drawn to the John McCain that John McCain used to be. Hell, I was a HUGE fan when he denounced the "agents of intolerance" like Fallwell and Robertson. That was AWESOME.

And then he turned into a sad, pitiful caricature of himself and embraced those clowns. And it just got worse from there.

Angelina Jolie announced that she would probably vote for Obama. I thought at the time that perhaps she had been waiting for Eastwood to make his announcement because of her affiliation with him on the movie 'The Changeling' and did not want the media to have a division between them to report on before/during the publicity campaign for the movie. Just the weird way I think some times.

36. I recall even Keith Olbermann a few years ago on Dan Patrick's show saying that
although he doesn't vote, there was a time when he would have liked to have been able to vote for McCain if he did. Mind you, this was back when McCain's "maverick" reputation was still intact. It was entirely conceivable that Olbermann, who is not the blue-bleeding Dem some people think he is and who has political opinions both liberal and conservative even though he obviously leans liberal, would have found the truly mavericky version of McCain appealing in an across-the-aisle, doesn't-swim-with-the-Republican-tide kind of way.

Obviously, however, those days are long gone--and so is Olbermann's admiration of him.

Bulworth was about the most honest political movie ever made! No rethug would ever be able to play that role. Dishonesty is a major component of Rethug DNA.

Several names on that list, including Lear and Jones, gave McCain donations eight years ago. And Beatty was, in 2000, also a "supporter," according to one source I found. But that's NOT the way the playing field stands anymore.

Not that it's that big of a deal, but we should keep these things straight. I might choose never to watch an Adam Sandler movie again now that I know he's in the bag for McCain. (Yeah, he's only made, like, one good movie, but I REALLY liked that movie! That movie, btw, was Punch Drunk Love).

I think what is throwing off your list is that many, many wealthy people, including Hollywood types, with business interests contribute to both sides of every campaign -- mainly to protect their interests.

Lear, Douglas and Jones are pretty openly liberal. Lear even financed several big liberal organizations. All three are listed as far left by the "Hollywood Republicans" site.

I thought he was too smart to do that. Thought he'd be too disgusted by the Governator's past to support his campaign. But I looked it up and saw the articles and now admire Carvey less.

I admire his skill as a comedian, certainly, but think less of his intellect if he can actually support Republicans and their destructive elitist policies.

And I thought the "admiration" for Poppy Bush could have been admiring his sportsmanship in taking the teasing Carvey did so well.

Damn, damn, damn.

I remember when BartCop was all gaga for Angie Harmon back in 2002. I haven't looked at the site since 2004, but it's a pretty safe bet to say he's not crazy for her anymore!

She's the classic example of someone who gets married, has kids, and decides ZOMG I Gotta Be A Rightie To Be A Good Parent!!!!!111!!

is in a party all by himself, called the INSANE NUT party. Plus, he is actually a Libertarian. I hate Nugent, but there are a few platforms that the Libertarian have that aren't half bad, like legalizing recreational drugs, and staying the fuck out of our personal lives. Bob Barr is not representative of most Libertarians, he just had name recognition and was pissed at the republicans, so they nominated him.

Jones endorsed Clinton - haven't found out who he's supporting
now. But according to the LA times, both Gordy and Jones
donated to McCain - it looks like a number of people did, but
were aggravated about McCain;s Paris Hilton/Obama celebrity
thing.

142. Before you post like that, you should at least read a post and Google. Link is here
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-cause1-2008aug01,0,6538800.story

the excerpt is

At the time, dozens of people in Hollywood -- including Lear, Harrison Ford, Quincy Jones, Berry Gordy and Michael Douglas -- gave to McCain because they thought he was a Republican celebrity ď with a great personal story. And, dare we say, some celebrities, namely Warren Beatty, even became friends with the Arizona senator.

The claim was precisely that the people I had listed had given to or supported McCain. I did not specify a time.

Edited on Wed Oct-29-08 05:46 PM by PelosiFan
"But the truth is most of Hollywood won't return McCain's calls nowadays because many of the stars and executives he initially impressed now believe the maverick stance they found so attractive was just a pose. Hollywood doesn't object to a good pose -- unless, of course, it doesn't work."

He did have a great personal story, on the surface.

I can forgive a few people I admire for being fooled. Fortunately they didn't waste their votes. And they DON'T "support McCain."

135. I don't think Harrison Ford is a registered republican
Edited on Wed Oct-29-08 05:02 PM by susanwy
http://www.newsmeat.com/celebrity_political_donations/Harrison_Ford.php

Most donations are to Dems and here in WY he is very supportive of progressive causes. Just because he donated to McCain once in 2000 does not make him a republican, besides he donated 10 times the amount to Gore that year. I know a lot of independents in WY liked McCain in 2000, and in fact he was WAY better than Bush, but he is now a changed man.

So, unless you have other proof about Ford, I would remove him.

EDIT: Gary Sinise, republican. I defended him because of comments Al Franken made about his dedication to the troops and USO tours. I still think he is a fine actor, too bad he had to start doing TV. Plus, he and Tim Robbins have remained friends, so he must be a "decent" republican who can agree to disagree.

164. You might want to take out Norman Lear, Michael Douglas, Quincy Jones
In addition to his success as a TV producer and businessman, Lear is an outspoken supporter of First Amendment and liberal causes. The only time that he didn't support a Democrat was in 1980 when he voted for John Anderson because he considered the Carter administration to be "a disaster". Taking a less active role in his TV productions in 1978, he soon turned his eyes to political activism, founding People for the American Way in 1981. People for the American Way ran a number of campaigns about religion in politics, and in 1987 helped lead the campaign to stop Robert Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court of the United States.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Lear

Douglas is an advocate of nuclear disarmament, is a supporter of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and sits on the Board of Directors of the Ploughshares Fund. In 1998 he was appointed UN Messenger of Peace by Secretary-General Kofi Annan.<9> He is a notable Democrat, has donated money mainly to Democratic candidates<10> and backed Hillary Clinton for the 2008 U.S. Presidential election.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Douglas

Jones's social activism began in the 1960s with his support of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jones is one of the founders of the Institute for Black American Music (IBAM) whose events aim to raise enough funds for the creation of a national library of African-American art and music. Jones is also one of the founders of the Black Arts Festival in his hometown Chicago. For many years he has worked closely with Bono of U2 on a number of philanthropic issues. He is the founder of the Quincy Jones Listen Up Foundation, a charity which connects youths with technology, education, culture and music. One of the organizations programs is an intercultural exchange between underprivileged youths from Los Angeles and South Africa.
In 2001, the Quincy Jones Listen Up Foundation built over 100 homes for Nelson Mandela's foundation in South Africa.
In 2004, Jones helped launch the We Are the Future (WAF) project, which gives children in poor and conflict-ridden areas a chance to live their childhoods and develop a sense of hope. The program is the result of a strategic partnership between the Glocal Forum, the Quincy Jones Listen Up Foundation and Mr. Hani Masri, with the support of the World Bank, UN agencies and major companies. The project was launched with a concert in Rome, Italy, in front of a half-million-person audience.
Jones supports a number of other charities including the NAACP, GLAAD, Peace Games and AmFAR. On July 26, 2007 he announced his endorsement of Hillary Clinton for president.

it's sort of a "daily show" approach to mainstream television, gives just enough cultural reference so you know what people are talking about near the water cooler, without having to be subjected to any of the actual shows at length. plus, it's hilarious, and wonderfully mean-spirited towards all the worst elements of pop culture. soup has a website here: http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/the_soup/index.html

Two of the dumbest people on TV trying to make it big. The Hills is (I THINK) a spin off of The OC. I've never seen the OC, so I'm not sure.
The Hills is just a show that follows around a girl who "works" in fashion and blah blah blah. She used to be friends with Heidi until Heidi started dating her archenemy, Spencer Pratt.

Heidi is trying to make it big in the music scene. If you youtube some of her "music videos", they're pretty funny. Although probably more pathetic than funny.

79. Is Britney supporting McCain or is it that stupid statement about trusting Bush?
Edited on Wed Oct-29-08 11:42 AM by mvd
Paris Hilton made fun of McCain's ad. Not sure how she's voting.

Did Hilary actually endorse McCain? I recall her not being that pleased about Bush, though it seems her family is Repuke.

Miley Cyrus couldn't even understand what she was saying in "Wake Up America," so has she really gotten into politics?

I'm not a fan of any of these singers, but I wonder if they actually support McCain.

166. Ok, I'm a Britney fan so I'll defend her
She did make that horrible statement about trusting the president no matter what. Yes, a dumb statement but it was, sadly, the majority opinion at that time. Recently, during a court case, it was revealed that she hasn't voted in recent years. I doubt she follows politics. When she was younger, she probably would have said she leans Republican because that's who her conservative family supported. Personally, I don't think she's a conservative person and if she thought for herself, rather than relying on her family's influence, she would be more Democratic. I doubt she's voting this year.

145. I disagree on one point
If I was making a film, I would not cast a Rethug. I don't how talented they are, I'd cast a democrat of equal talent instead. Somebody being a Rethug would be a deal breaker for me. There are way more talented Democrats that could use the work.
BTW, Leni Riefenstahl was a very talented artist. Does that forgive her for making Triumph of the Will?
Please don't lump all of us Democrats into this la-la forgiving mold. I'd gladly throw most of these RWers under a bus and laugh about it to boot. I've spent my entire adult life (save eight years) under Rethug rule, with my liberal views being mocked in the media and in entertainment by many of these right wing jagoffs. Before my lifetime, there was the Blacklist that targeted liberals and leftists. People like Ronald Reagan and Elia Kazan willingly ruined the livelyhood of wonderful artists such as Ben Hecht, Dalton Trumbo, Charlie Chaplin, Will Geer, etc.
I think more than a little payback is due.

I could list more country singers, of course. I like Taylor Swift, and since she's of voting age now, I wanted to see if I could get any info on her. Apparently she won't say who she's voting for and doesn't consider herself a Republican or a Democrat. Since she thinks Reba McEntire would make a good President, though, I don't have faith in her judgment.

Carrie Underwood isn't interested in politics according to new info. I have seen (says she doesn't even know who her parents vote for.) That surprises me, since she's smart and worked as an intern in a state politician's office.

On the show, the characters of Diane and Frasier were the liberals of the bunch. Sam and Woody were generally conservative or apolitical.

In real life, both Shelley Long and Kelsey Grammer are huge Republicans (although I don't know if this was the case during the show or if it came about through 9/11 hysteria). Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson, are, on the other hand, devout liberals.

179. He has contributed to McCain in the past, though. Contributing to one or the other does not mean a
celeb is a Dem for all purposes or a Pub for all purposes, or even a McCain supporter for all purposes. That is where the confusion seems to be. My original post on this said simply, these people have contributed to and/or supported McCain in the past. But people don't always read the entire post. Plus people leap to their own conclusions.
