If Your Pastor This Sunday Tells You To Vote For McCain, Ask Your Pastor About These Biblical Quotes
Edited on Tue Oct-28-08 06:56 PM by Median Democrat
Ask him to read these quotes, and ask if Jesus was a socialist? Afterall, Obama is only advocating a progressive tax, but Jesus was much more assertive:

"If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered."

-Proverbs 21:13

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."

-Proverbs 31:8-9

"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."

-Matthew 6:24

He who mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished."

-Proverbs 17:5

"He who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and he who gives gifts to the rich--both come to poverty."

-Proverbs 22:16

"Jesus answered, 'If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'"

-Matthew 19:21

"He who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he who closes his eyes to them receives many curses."

-Proverbs 28:27

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

- Luke 12:33,34

Indeed, liberation theology, which the Right Wing Christians consider leftist, is based on this quote from Jesus:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." (Luke 4:18-19)

Just as we talk about how Big Media has become a propaganda tool for corporations, it seems that religion in America has also been similarly hijacked. Afterall, how can the Evangelical right wing support a Republican party that has turned its back on the needs of most Americans?

since he's violated the separation of church and state.

7. Ezekiel 25:17
Edited on Tue Oct-28-08 07:05 PM by Gman
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

8. Come on now
It is much more fun to try to twist some biblical passages to rail against those evil fags and their lust for converting the youth to gaydom.

17. Well, I'm pretty sure my pastor and pretty much the whole congregation is voting Obama
My church really doesn't like to talk about partisan politics -- but whenever it comes up, we all seem to agree -- and then we all head the conversation promptly back to churchy stuff

19. You might also ask him if he's aware of IRS 501(C)3 laws prohibiting politics in churches.
Because if he is, he's KNOWINGLY breaking the damn law by preaching for ANY candidate. If he is not familiar with the IRS code he better learn PDQ because his activities are huge potential threat to the church's continued exemption from taxes.

I guess you could say you are trying to "save" him.

But I actually think my minister is pretty progressive but she doesn't preach her politics.

23. I Think Democrats Should Use Quotes Like This Offensively, Rather Than Defensively!
Too often we have Republicans beating us over the head by claiming that the bible or the church require us to vote for the Republican candidate. I would love it if we start turning the tables on them by saying that the Bible supports liberal policies. Watch them slink back and try to argue that you should not mix religion and politics.

My point is that we have given up the Bible to the right wing. We should take it back and point out that much of the evangelical right wing rhetoric based on the bible is based on distortion, and efforts by the Christian right and corporations to distract from the biblical messages listed in the OP.
