Big crowds for Obama, jittery supporters for McCain
SARASOTA, Fla. — A man at the periphery of the Republican crowd waved a sign that said “John McCain Feels Your Pain.”

It was hard to know whether he meant the economic crisis or the plight of the McCain campaign itself.

Barack Obama is enjoying big crowds and a favorable political map, while Mr. McCain faces jittery supporters and poll numbers that piled up like a body count.

In the final days before the election, the two campaigns are a study in contrasts — Team Obama guarding against overconfidence, the McCain camp insisting it won’t be written off.

One thing’s the same. The two-year quest for the White House has distilled itself on both sides around a single theme: who can allay the economic fears of middle-class Americans.
