or does the election have to be postponed until the "special" election takes place?

2. There are no rules that say there have to be one Republican and one Democrat on the ballot

3. The election goes on as planned
Stevens would remain on the ballot and voters would decide who gets the six year term.

4. If they've already started voting, his name stays on the ballot.
If he wins, the Gov will name a replacement. If the ballots are already printed, the same would probably apply. The logistics of making new ballots would be prohibitive.

6. No, she cannot name a replacement
We killed that nonsense after our former governor Frank Murkowski vacated his senate seat, won the governorship, and then appointed his daughter Lisa to the senate. There now has to be a special election. Palin cannot appoint anything.

7. Stevens won't step down, and even if he did, his name remains on the ballot
Palin did not call for Stevens to step down until today after McCain inexplicably did.

8. No...
His name is on the ballot.

He could resign, get re-elected and STILL return to the Senate.

Interestingly, it might be possible for him to argue that he can't be kept in jail because the Constitution has prohibitions against preventing members of the Congress or Senate from attending session through arrest, etc.

I think the Senate will have to throw him out on his ear if he wins re-election.
