Origin of intentionally misspelled "moron"

I'm rather new to DU and still catching on to lots of things. One of the things I'm still wondering about is why so many people misspell the word "moron" and opt for "moran". I suspect it has something to do with some dumbass at a Palin rally who tried to be clever with a sign (like the "mavrick" guy at the rnc).

So can somebody please tell me where this "moran" tradition comes from?

I believe it has to do with someone at Bush rally 4 years ago...some Bush supporter was holding a sign and he spelled it wrong...hahaha...

3. It was a photo of a redneck protester's sign

There was a photo a few years ago of a redneck holding up a sign protesting a Democrat that was calling him a "Moran".
