LA Times - GOP Is Poised To Become Even More Conservative After the Election. Amazing!
Edited on Tue Oct-28-08 11:46 AM by Median Democrat
This article in the LA Times discusses how the GOP is poised to grow even more conservative following the election. You would think that with the prospect of losses in the upcoming election that the GOP would try to move towards the center. However, the GOP is doing the opposite and cozying up even closer to social conservatives.

The social conservatives and moderates who together boosted the Republican Party to dominance have begun a tense battle over the future of the GOP, with social conservatives already moving to seize control of the party's machinery and some vowing to limit John McCain's influence, even if he wins the presidency.

In skirmishes around the country in recent months, evangelicals and others who believe Republicans have been too timid in fighting abortion, gay marriage and illegal immigration have won election to the party's national committee, in preparation for a fight over the direction and leadership of the party.

The growing power of religious conservatives is alarming some moderate Republicans who believe that the party's main problem is that it has narrowed its appeal and alienated too many voters. They cite the aggressive tone of the McCain campaign in challenging Barack Obama, who has close to universal support from African American voters; as well as the push by many Republican leaders to clamp down on illegal immigration using rhetoric that has driven away Latinos.

3. I predict moderates and libertarians will merge, into a oppositiion party to the Democratic Party
The GOP has gone into Whig territory, no big bucks are going to pour money into a backward-ass regional party.

15. I don't think moderate Republicans & Libertarians are coming from the same place.
The two big parties have for a long time had room for various factions. I don't expect that the far right will hold on for long. A couple of buttkickings
and the GOP will be back to their coalition of crooks that has worked so well for them over the years.

4. I haven't read the article yet, so this is just off the top of my head:
I say, "good." Because those with sense and decency will either become moderate or conservative Democrats, or they will begin a viable third party and, in the end, those on the far right will be minimized and, in essence, the actual Republican party will be back through this new third party. I don't know what they'll call themselves, maybe something like the Conservative Independent Party, or something along those descriptive lines.

19. Over until they find a new star to jump on. Don't ignore history.
I remember a college political science professor at San Diego State University who remarked in the mid 1960s that the GOP would never again elect
a President or hold a majority in Congress. Never count corrupt people out.

23. Their new stars are Sarah Freaking Palin and Adam "Opie" Putnam.
The GOP is dying regardless of your 40 year old anecdote.

Alienate all Americans that have friends and family who are gay and Latino.

And those true Republicans should get that Rev. Murthee that Sarah likes back out there to warn everyone about those Israelite bankers. His last video didn't get 1/10 of the play that the Rev. Wright stuff got.

Show us who the Modern Republicans really are -- Neo Nazis and proud of it.

however I seriously doubt the right wing will be able to keep control of the GOP. Me thinks there will be a major fracturing within the GOP after the election. Lot's of blaming...

14. The GOP is going to break in half. The split will be between the fundie nut jobs and
the rich people. Fundie nut jobs are fine when they are helping you win. They are just not that much fun when they can't pull off an election for you.

17. Great! Let them ride dinosaurs and fly pterodactyls - Let them return to the stone age
and argue among themselves whether fire is really a new-fangled liberal plot. Let them continue rejecting modern science and other intellectual pursuits. They're putting themselves on the road to extinction.

21. The really great thing is, we can probably still run against G.W. B*sh in 2012.
People are still going to remember what a terrible president he was, that he was a Rethug, that he lied and started wars, and that he had the same policies as the extremists that will run in 2012. As long as the country isn't significantly worse off 4 yrs from now, I think we should be able to keep control of the White House and Congress for at least 6 yrs.
