Anne Hathaway Caught Up in Vote-Rocking Scam
http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/27/tracking-rock-the-vote-registration-woes/?apage=1

About 10 days ago, when the actress Anne Hathaway was recording a public service announcement for Rock the Vote, she told Ms. Smith that she had used the group’s on-line form but didn’t find her name on the rolls. In verifying her registration – Ms. Hathaway’s voter identification number was ultimately tracked down — Ms. Smith said she learned that about 40,000 applications had not been processed.

This past weekend, the group’s lawyers were in touch with New York election officials, who said they were clearing up a last-minute rush of registration applications. Ms. Smith said that Rock the Vote would advocate for anyone who applied on time.

Even so, some would-be voters in the city will be out of luck, officials said.

“We had almost 211,000 registrations come in the last week,” Valerie Vazquez a spokeswoman for the city’s Board of Elections, said on Friday. “A lot of them were missing critical information, such as the signature or full address. Unfortunately, we cannot process them without that critical information.”

It is too late for those people to resubmit the form, Ms. Vazquez said, because the deadline, Oct. 10, is set by state law. (Some states permit same-day registration and voting.)

4. It was NOT a scam. Rock the Vote got the address from the Federal
Elections Commission, and the Albany address was confirmed by NY State. Unfortunately, this caused a delay.

From the link at the OP:

More than 2.5 million people downloaded registration forms from Rock the Vote this year, up from 1.2 million in 2004, Ms. Smith said. In New York, as in other states, the applications provided by Rock the Vote were automatically printed with the address of a central office, and not the local boards that typically handle registrations. In New York, the forms were sent to the State Board of Elections, which cannot register anyone; the state Web site instructs voters to register directly with their county offices.

Ms. Smith said that Rock the Vote printed the state board’s address on its application because it was on a list of central addresses for each state provided by the federal Elections Assistance Commission, and because her group got written confirmation twice from New York State officials that they could receive the applications in Albany. All the groups doing registration drives, including Rock the Vote, may have lost time by following the federal instructions.

State officials opened bushels of applications, noted the time they were received, and then shipped them onto the county offices. “It would have been faster for those organizations to direct people to mail them to their counties,” Robert Brehm, a spokesman for the state board, said on Friday, because the state constitution puts voter registration under the exclusive control of those county boards.

Rock the Vote will consider having applications sent straight to the county boards in the future, Ms. Smith said, but for now, it will focus on making sure people who tried to register have a chance to vote next week.

9. voters need to start accepting some of the responsibility...
if you quickly fill out a card in slopping hand-writing and forget to sign it... dont later scream about "voter fraud" or "suppression" if your damn name isnt on the state list.

we have to start making sure folks CHECK THEIR REGISTRATION way in advance.

it's not always a conspiracy, folks.

a simple typo based on bad handwriting or sloppy data-entry can be enough. we have to take responsibility not to wait until showing up at the polling site to find out something is wrong.

in 2004, 'Rock The Vote'

The same problem arised last where as many people did not get to vote.
