Time for Kerry to put the heat on Chimpy with Assault Weapons Ban
Al Qaeda would love to have the ban lifted NEXT MONDAY AT MIDNIGHT!
http://www.vpc.org/studies/jihad.htm

An 18-year-old malcontent would love to have the ban lifted NEXT MONDAY AT MIDNIGHT!

Bush needs to sign the ban my next Monday at Midnight or face the wrath of his carelessness and being a whore for the NRA.

Sign the petition.

4. WV, particularly
I go there every summer, talk to people about hunting/guns all the time

this is BAD news for Kerry

he's ignored it, and will stay away from it

pugs will bring it up, you can be sure, cause it's one of the wedge issues they love

it's more controversial, less assuredly a winner nationwide, so you won't see national discussion

look for it in gunlovin' swing states. it also might have an effect in Southern Ohio

7. Sure, and why bring up Jim Crow laws?
Don't want to risk losing the white vote. And let's not mention the sodomy laws - could risk the homophobe vote.

8. Assault weapons Ban vs. Hunters, etc.
Edited on Tue Sep-07-04 04:35 PM by zulchzulu
Those that are in Chimpy's camp because they are NRA fans are unconvertible to Kerry.

This is an issue that swing voters in MO, WI and even TN, WV and AK would understand if you do it correctly.

Use the back-to-school situation that America is in to say that Bush is allowing for more Columbines, more school shootings, more danger.

Making America safer is not what happens when an 18-year-old can go downtown and get an AK47.

The loopy numbnuts that think Kerry wants to take away their guns are hopefully too stupid to vote anyway.

Bush is going to let it lapse anyway. Then the ads will make good use of that. Presidents Reagan, Ford, Carter, and Clinton, and by Republicans Tom Ridge and Rudy Giuliani were for the ban.

17. Half the union members in America are NRA members or gun owning
supporters of the NRA in elections. We are losing these "natural Dems" from our base. In some recent elections as many as 40% of union members are voting Repub, and gun control is reason number one.

The AWB doesn't work in practice, and cannot be made to work. It is a fool's errand, and gun owners know it.

We need to admit this was a mistake.

18. Basic parameters in Assault Weapons Ban
The law banned rifles that had detachable magazines and two or more of the following characteristics:

A folding or telescoping stock
A pistol grip
A bayonet mount
A flash suppressor, or threads to attach one (a flash suppressor reduces the amount of flash that the rifle shot makes. It is the small birdcage-like item on the muzzle of the rifle)
A grenade launcher

19. Actually it only banned the
manufacture of semi-auto rifles with detachable magazines that had more than one of those features. The ones manufactured before the ban went into effect were grandfathered and perfectly legal.

16. Sad but true.
Maybe those states should run some commercials with Kerry hunting or something.
Hello, Kerry is not coming for your gun.

3. No, not Kerry. Congress needs to do that.
The gum thing is what got Gore into trouble in quite a few states in 2000. This is something that must be handled in Congress NOW anyway. It can't wait until January for a new President.

6. Gun control laws are ineffective to the point of being ludicrous. We need
to stay away from this, and actually should repudiate gun control as a Dem issues. It has cost us 10 million votes nationwide and hasn't saved a single life, in fact has cost lives.

It is the single worst initiative the Dems have adopted in the last ten years.

14. The assault weapons ban hasn't stopped the sale of one assault weapon.
The law is a siv, and the manufactures had work arounds in place in about five minutes. Anyone who wants an "assault" weapon has one.

And the overall effect of gun control laws has been worse. 20 years ago Americans owned about 200 million guns, most owned by hunters and target shooters. When gun control became a big issue and the NRA mounted a counter attack, citizens who never thought about owning a gun rushed out to buy one, many of them handguns for self protection. They bought them in part because of the fear that it was now or never.

Another 100 million guns have been sold in that time, most of them to non hunters, thanks in large part to gun control nuts who are long on good intentions and short on practical policy.

Gun control legislation has been a national disaster.

9. Right.
Al Qaeda really wants the ban lifted so they can come to america and buy $400 semi-auto AK-47s with flash suppressors and bayonet lugs instead of buying semi-auto AK-47s without them. Or, you know, buying the machine gun version in the middle east for $25 at an open air market. :eyes:

Though I risk being accused of taunting people for suggesting people read a law they support again, might I suggest you actually read the Assault Weapons Ban so you'd have a bit of a clue about what it actually does?

10. I'm not saying that AQ is waiting for the ban to be lifted, but...
..an ad using that link from an AQ Training Manual sure would make a nice 527 ad.

As for the AWB, you seem to like it. What's your take?

13. I don't like the AWB.
It's easily one of the dumbest laws ever passed. A fine example of what happens when people who are completely ignorant on an issue try and write legislation on that issue.

Is there anyone out there that doesn't know Kerry is for renewing or expanding the AWB?
