Ensign: McCain makes Senate races more difficult

Ensign: McCain makes Senate races more difficult

By Klaus Marre

Nevada Sen. John Ensign, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, on Monday said John McCain’s presidential run is making Senate races “more difficult” for the GOP.

Ensign said there is a “fair possibility” that Democrats could gain 60 seats in the Senate.

“There's no question the top of the ticket is affecting our Senate races and it’s making it a lot more difficult,” Ensign said on MSNBC. “It’s a fairly toxic atmosphere out there with the financial crisis for Republicans.”

However, Ensign noted that Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman (Conn.) could be a wild card in the Senate power play.

“We welcome Joe. I think Joe’s a terrific guy with a lot of integrity and does what he believes,” Ensign stated. “But, you know, it'll be interesting to see how the Democrats handle Joe Lieberman after what he's done in this presidential race. But as far as Republicans are concerned, we welcome him with open arms.”

Lieberman is a staunch supporter of Republican presidential nominee Sen. McCain (Ariz.).

McCain is a pariah.

3. I don't see why Lieberman would matter like Ensign says
Seriously, why does Lieberman matter for if we reach the magic 60 mark.

If Lieberman agrees with us on an issue/bill up for a vote is he really going to vote against what he truly believes in just because he decides to caucus with the side that strongly disagrees on that issue/bill?

Besides, even with say a 59 vote majority we could probably swing over a moderate republican or two to get past a filibuster on most bills.

5. If for no other reason, I hope the Dems have 60 seats just so they can kick LIEberman out the door!
