How can the Republicans possibly hope to win Stevens' senate seat?

At this point keeping him on is yet another anchor around the GOP, and I don't see how they could officially go nominate someone else (unless they went back to a primary challenger), or mount a successful write-in candidacy. Does this essentially hand the seat to the Democrats?
