McCain Camp: "If we’re still within the margin of error (in polling), we’re going to win"

John McCain's own polling gives him hope, an aide says

When John McCain insisted, during his appearance Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," that he was doing "just fine" in a presidential race in which the polls have shown Barack Obama with a steady lead over the last few weeks, many may have dismissed the comment as just something that a candidate has to say.

Not so, said a campaign official who spoke on background with The Times' Bob Drogin. The aide said the campaign's internal polling showed McCain down only 4 percentage points nationally -– a sharp improvement from a week ago -- and closing fast.

State-by-state, the private polling also showed McCain up 1 point in Ohio, North Carolina, Florida and Missouri, and behind by only 3 points in Virginia (a new Washington Post survey found him down 8 there).

McCain almost assuredly needs to capture all five states to win the presidency. And even that may not be enough if he fails to win Pennsylvania, one of his campaign stops today. Without Pennsylvania, McCain needs to pull more electoral votes out of some combination of Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico or Iowa -– all states where, as of now, the internal numbers look bleak.

The anonymous McCain official argued a comeback remains doable. “Check with me Wednesday,” the aide said. “If we’re still within the margin of error (in polling), we’re going to win.”

1. They think that last-minute undecideds will break for him.
And the scary thing is that it may not be wrong.

3. No, they know if they're within the margin of error, they can steal the election
as they did in '04.

And unless both the Democrats and media stop them, they will.

6. Yeah. I think that's what he's talking about.
They've left a lot of clues that they expect to steal it again.

10. Obama has a huge EI team in place already
...he has seen the last two elections stolen, and has been on top of this already- voter registration 'issues', etc.

12. that was totally my first thought too
I don't know whether it was as glaringly obvious as it seems or whether I'm just primed to assume election fraud.

I wonder whether the MSM will interpret it that way, too. It just seems so typically and obviously hamhanded an attempt to try to prepare the news media to simply accept funky results on election night.

19. that has me a little scared, I admit.
The thefts in 2000 (Florida)and 2004 (Ohio) are still fresh and painful for me.
These criminal lying bastards will stop at nothing...nothing.
But, then again, I was on alert when Pillsbury Dough-Boy Rove said in 2006 that he had the secret math that showed a big RePuke win...and thankfully he was blowing smoke out of his fat ass.

7. The opposite seems to be happening. His supporters are becoming undecided.
There's a thread here this morning noting that the numbers of undecided voters are increasing, the numbers of Obama supporters are increasing, and the number of McCain supporters are decreasing.

This means that McCain is losing supporters. They are becoming either undecided or Obama supporters.

18. I need to find that thread. I think McCain would do anything to win. As we've all seen.
I loathe him and Palin more each day.

5. Why does "private polling" produce a different result from the mainstream polls?
Do they sample more or fewer Republicans or Democrats, or ask the question differently, or what? Do we know?

24. Afraid to say they have history on their
side regarding that. It's great that registration is up all over the place. Now they have to vote and every 4 years I hear how the youth are going to come out big. I'm still waiting.

17. We've held steady at 53-50
for like 3 weeks now. If the numbers stay like that, McCain needs turnout to be out of 200% instead of 100%.

We're sitting pretty, just don't let up and we'll be fine.

21. Their internal polling is lying to them anyway about Virginia.
And I think they still believe that young voters and AA voters will not show up to the polls.
