A few caveats...allowing that something "funny" went on the last two elections and the polls, though encouraging, are, to me, not nearly as decisively Obama as they should be, on his merit -
We've had 8 years of knocking science, an ascendance of hard core religion as an influence, teaching to the test. We've had 8 years of a president who wallowed in being a common guy, someone you would like to have a beer with - someone whose intellect probably makes a big slug of the USA (mostly Conservative) feel pretty comfortable.
To us, the choice between McCain (failed student, with a Joe Six Pack running mate) and Obama (who has it all - charisma, intellect, ability, leadership) is an absolute no brainer - a laugher, in fact. Maybe economic disaster has finally awakened enough people who would tend to favor the Joe Six Pack type, the one issue right wing agenda voter, or the racists who probably could never have seen themselves voting for Obama, to bring this home for us. But the fact that there could be any doubt at all is just shocking to me. Is it a consequence of the mistrust of intellect and a relative increase in those who feel that way? Makes me just shake my head in wonder....
