Cool discussion with a soon to be American today
When I was shopping this afternoon the cashier noticed my Obama button. He began to tell me how much he admired the senator and how he wished that he could vote for him as well. I asked him when he would be eligible to vote and he said he would not be eligible for citizenship for another two years. I told him that he still could work toward getting Obama elected and then vote for his reelection in 2012. His face lit up. Just a reminder of what we take for granted. In 10 days we will be part of the most exciting election in our history!

1. I have a confession to make
I and my wife have been living in the US for about 6 years as permanent residents. The rule is that you have to have 5 years as a PR before you can apply for citizenship. Well I asked my wife earlier this year whether she wanted to apply for citizenship and she said no, she did not want to become a citizen under a republican president. I was sad that she made that decision but could see her point (we live in a red state so we thought well whats the point of voting here anyway).
Anyway, last week I was delighted when she said if Obama is elected President then she would be very excited about becoming a citizen. We are so excited about this prospect- it will renew our belief in the United states of America as a great country.

2. we are glad you are here!
:)

if you don't like the way things are, you can try to change them. That's why we are all here on DU!
Many of us are working in the campaign or the Party to make things better.

you can volunteer now, even if you can't vote yet.

Tell your wife that the two of you need to become citizens so that you can vote and VOTE BLUE! :hi:

YES WE CAN!!! even in Texas!
