1. Bush told them to "bring it on". They did.
My heart goes out to all the family members and friends of the fallen. And for the soldiers we have lost, may they rest in peace.

4. very sad
what a waste.

and we're "liberating" Sadr City today. A slum of 2 million. Good luck.

I saw one statistic that from our troops have been 15,000+ amputees.

Unreal how the media is ignoring the stupidity of this venture.

8. It could have just been one...
http://www.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/meast/10/03/iraq.bush.duel/

W.H. rejects Bush-Saddam duel offer

...""Bush wants to attack the whole Iraq, the army and the infrastructure," Ramadan said. "If such a call is genuine, then let the American president and a selected group with him face a selected group of us and we choose a neutral land and let Kofi Annan be a supervisor and both groups should use the same weapon."

"A president against a president and vice president against a vice president, and a duel takes place, if they are serious," the Iraqi vice president said. "And in this way we are saving the American and Iraqi people." "

He's apparently big on the "ten paces at high noon" philosophy of diplomacy.

9. Unfortunately, we are well over 1,000
7 Marines yesterday -- at least 3 more soldiers in a road-side explosion today

None of those (or others that the press hasn't covered) have reached the official totals yet. It's quite probable that while Shrub was crying crocodile tears at the RNC, the 1,000th soldier fell in Iraq.

But what does this bastard who refers to our troops as "fodder units" care?

14. It sounds terrible to say this but...
...I did notice that during the convention the total seemed to "lock" at 978 for days on end..as if the insurgents took a "customary" week off to let the republican opposition have their week to themselves. Some friends and I wondered if the numbers were being suppressed/massaged during the convention so no one could bring up the "every day a soldier is killed" truth.

Then miraculously, the day after the republi-con ends, the totals move up again, ratcheting up at a fever pitch (as though a dam/media blackout had burst) on the weekend. In the seven days of September, we've seen nearly a third of last month's total killed—which was the third month in a row the deaths went up. (Two of the months-post handover of--don't laugh--"sovereignity")

Does this venal bastard's desired do-over restore to life the perhaps 1200-plus soldiers (we know of) his little excursion will cost us? I should think not. And that do-over ain't comin' either! ;(

16. Even more curious
The day before the RNC, the totals jumped into the 980s... within a few hours they were set back into the 970s (and stayed there throughout the convention).

It must be extremely difficult to part of a political party that preaches personal responsibility and have to support an administration that refuses to take responsibility for anything.
