Eisenhower, Goldwater, Nixon, Reagan support ... Obama

CC Goldwater

Being Barry Goldwater's granddaughter and living in Arizona, one would assume that I would be voting for our state's senator, John McCain. I am still struck by certain 'dyed in the wool' Republicans who are on the fence this election, as it seems like a no-brainer to me.

Myself, along with my siblings and a few cousins, will not be supporting the Republican presidential candidates this year. We believe strongly in what our grandfather stood for: honesty, integrity, and personal freedom, free from political maneuvering and fear tactics. I learned a lot about my grandfather while producing the documentary, Mr. Conservative Goldwater on Goldwater. Our generation of Goldwaters expects government to provide for constitutional protections. We reject the constant intrusion into our personal lives, along with other crucial policy issues of the McCain/Palin ticket.

Susan Eisenhower

I have decided I can no longer be a registered Republican. For the first time in my life I announced my support for a Democratic candidate for the presidency, in February of this year. This was not an endorsement of the Democratic platform, nor was it a slap in the face to the Republican Party. It was an expression of support specifically for Senator Barack Obama. I had always intended to go back to party ranks after the election and work with my many dedicated friends and colleagues to help reshape the GOP, especially in the foreign-policy arena. But I now know I will be more effective focusing on our national and international problems than I will be in trying to reinvigorate a political organization that has already consumed nearly all of its moderate “seed corn.” And now, as the party threatens to trivialize what promised to be a serious debate on our future direction, it will alienate many young people who might have come into party ranks.

My decision came at the end of last week when it was demonstrated to the nation that McCain and this Bush White House have learned little in the last five years. They mishandled what became a crisis in the Caucasus, and this has undermined U.S. national security. At the same time, the McCain camp appears to be comfortable with running an unworthy Karl Rove–style political campaign. Will the McCain operation, and its sponsors, do anything to win?

Julie Nixon Eisenhower

(CNN)— Julie Nixon Eisenhower, a daughter of former Republican president Richard Nixon,
is supporting Democrat Barack Obama’s presidential bid.

Ron Reagan and Patty (Reagan) Davis

What is your take on Sarah Palin?

This is not really about Sarah Palin herself. She was McCain’s choice. He is the author of this Palin comedy we now have. It was the most reckless, irresponsible choice I’ve ever seen a candidate for president make. John McCain knows as well as anyone that Sarah Palin has no business being anywhere near the Oval Office. I’m sorry, it’s got nothing to do with the fact that she wears skirts — she’s grossly unqualified. The choice itself is sexist.

The kids are alright ... :D

1. Wow
I knew about CC and Susan and Ron and Patty, but not about Julie. That's really something. Wonder what her husband David thinks about things?

8. Seem to recall David's father giving about 20 reasons he was not voting for junior in 2004, but
am not aware of either John or David speaking about this election. :D

17. Nancy Reagan endorsement revocation rumors?
From City-Data forums: http://www.city-data.com/forum/2008-presidential-election/470696-eisenhower-goldwater-nixon-reagan-support-obama.html

Pirate Girl

Has anyone else heard rumblings about Nancy Reagan writing a letter to the editor of the Washington Post revoking her endorsement for John McCain and throwing her support behind Obama?

I was told she was planning to do this a couple of weeks ago- just prior to the last debate- but took that fall and broke her hip and her plans went awry. With her precarious health situation, the family hesitates to create a media circus but Mrs. Reagan feels strongly about changing her endorsement prior to election day.

I've heard this from several different sources and am surprised it hasn't been posted here.

Carol L

I haven't heard that, but I have read that the Reagans stopped socializing with the McCains after he left his first wife for Cindy. Apparently Nancy and Carol McCain were good friends. There's reportedly a lot of bad blood there, I've read.

As for Goldwaters and Eisenhowers being "ancient history," as a previous poster wrote: I guess I am pretty old (late 50s) but I remember G&E, and I think today they would be considered Democrats; shows how far right the gop has gone. The Julie Nixon endorsement really surprises me. In the 60s, when the rest of us had long hair and wearing jeans and beads and protesting against her father, she was straight as an arrow, cleancut, apple pie and a vocal and public supporter of her father right until the end.

I think these endorsements are fascinating. The Reagan kids don't surprise me, but the others took guts.

Susan Ford Bales - Chairman of the Betty Ford Center

I have not yet been able to find any endorsement by either Jack Ford or Susan Ford Bales.
Considering that their father, President Gerald Ford, was a moderate Republican and not a wingnut,
it would not surprise me if one (probably Susan) or the other supported Obama.

I was scrolling down...the list of writers. Some of the finest writers in the country is on that list. Hell, a Nobel Prize winner. A lot of my favorite actors and actresses are on that list...several Academy Award winners. I smiled reading those names. :-)

And I get the feeling Betty Ford isn't wildly enthusiastic for McCain/Palin.

26. Goldwater himself had become disgusted with the republican party before he died
Specifically he was disgusted with the religious right's influence on the party, and how they attacked privacy rights and civil rights (like abortion and gays).

From his wikipedia bio.

A few years before his death he went so far as to address the right wing, "Do not associate my name with anything you do. You are extremists, and you've hurt the Republican party much more than the Democrats have."<38>

In 1996 he told Bob Dole, whose own presidential campaign received lukewarm support from conservative Republicans: "We're the new liberals of the Republican party. Can you imagine that?"<39> In that same year, with Senator Dennis DeConcini, Goldwater endorsed an Arizona initiative to legalize medical marijuana against the will of social conservatives.<40>

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Goldwater#Libertarian_views

If he were alive today I'm sure he'd be disgusted with how McCain, who once stood up to the religious right and called them 'agents of intolerance' (or was that hate?) has caved in to their demands so much, to the point of putting one of their own extremists on his ticket.

Don't know if he'd endorse Obama if he were alive today or not, he hated big government, and anyone looking at the GOP today can't honestly say they've been the party of small government for the last 8 years, so perhaps he would indeed have endorsed Obama if he felt he wasn't going to get small government from either candidate.
