I hate when people attack those living in poverty.

You'll understand why this is in the General Discussion: Presidential in a second.

I'm in college, but I have many gay friends in high school. All of us GLBT members in this conservative area in SWMO pretty much know each other. But anyway, we were talking about something when he made the comment that those living in poverty are lazy. He works at Abercrombie and Fitch part time (10 to 15 hours) and uses his paychecks to buy clothes with his discounts. Worst of all he's one of the few homosexuals I've met with a strong RW Christian belief.

So I told him the facts: many of those who are poor have full time jobs, sometimes two jobs, in back breaking labor. They work hard, but unlike you have bills and responsibilities. I said I would know from experience because I work 40-45 hours a week in a full time job in Restaurant Management, and pay bills unlike him. He then says they choose to be poor, they can get better jobs. I say imagine you're a 25 year old mother of two and all of a sudden your husband to be dies. Suddenly you're left with two kids, and he was the bread winner. You tell that woman she's lazy. Better yet, tell my parents who for much of my childhood were in poverty they were lazy. Would Jesus call them lazy? Would Jesus tell you to look down on them?

He shut up quickly. And guess what he said next?

"You know how Sarah Palin is going to be in town Friday? I'm going to see her!"

Grrrr. Are you FUCKING kidding me?!?

6. Thanks, that came out HORRIBLY! Goes to show you what happens when you teach out a rant in anger.
I would think as an member of a group of people that are subject to stereotypes, that he wouldn't stereotype those living in poverty as lazy and bad people. Grrr. I'm ranting again. OK, I'm done.

3. That's annoying...
But I agree with the poster above me that you need to expand your circle a bit. I'm gay and a Catholic/Christian, but I believe in what Christ actually taught - charity, love, and peace, something neither your friend nor Palin seems to have sussed out of the New Testament.

5. partner and I have turned a gay friend of ours from the Dark Side
Raised a repub, he grew up hating Democrats because his "father lost his job while Jimmy Carter was president"...but we've got him voting for Obama. It's been a long rehabilitation process.

We're in Jeff City, btw, Kerry2008. :hi:

7. It was tough getting my mom and dad from the darkside, now I know anything is possible.
Now me, my father, my mother, and both of my brothers are voting Obama.

And hey to you and your partner from Springfield :)

Like the woman he's seeing on Friday.
I never understand why anyone votes against their own best interest. Doesn't he know Palin will try to "pray the gay" out of him?

9. I'm guessing that the brainwashing that was ushered into place
during reagan and pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps has not been broken.

10. He showed no compassion, none. To him, it's all their fault. They deserve it. They're lazy.
I asked him if he's volunteered in a soup kitchen or anything like that, and he said never.

I have, and I pointed out to him the people there often times have full time jobs. Sometimes two jobs.

12. One of my own coworkers said the other day that she didn't see why the Obamas had to go Ivy League.
Wasn't a non-Ivy League college good enough? Wasn't a state school good enough?

The implication being that if you don't have the money to pay for your own college education and you get help, you should be grateful for the opportunity to go to ANY college, period. Beggars can't be choosers.

I admit, I was a bit shocked. I have attended private and public schools (bachelor's is from a public, master's is from a private) and I could not have afforded college anywhere without help. That being said, my feeling is, if you can get into the school and can get help paying the bills, go for it. Whoever you are.

I told my coworker that were it not for my scholarships and financial aid, I would probably be working retail today on the selling floor of a store and making not much more than minimum wage, like my sisters before me who didn't go (one, at least, got out of retail).

I just didn't get why it was so wrong for the Obamas to go to Ivy League schools if they could get in and get it paid for.

Gosh...I sure hope she didn't mean that would have been OK for me, but for them, it was "uppity"...

If he gets his wish, and that Assemblies of God black hearted Palin psychopath gets power, along with Mcfascist McCain and when they gleefully implement the corporate/military/theocratic/fascism outlined in RW xtian Dominionist Agendas..all over this country....

Will he finally regret his petty poverty bashing and republican fawning?

Will he regret his vote when he can't buy nice clothes because Acrombie and fitch has long closed up shop, and he can't get work and mommie and daddy can't bail him or his lifestyle out..When reality begins to HURT him,

Will he regret his party affliations after Alleged "prophetess" Palin and AoG gets their curse "prayers" answered and that pig palin assumes the presidency, and makes the Noahide Laws the law of this land..

Will he feel a twinge of regret and shame when he gets put to death for being Gay by the very people HE voted for?
