GOP "Death List" Predicts Democratic Blowout in the House
October 22, 2008 03:49 PM ET | Paul Bedard | Permanent Link | Print
Voter displeasure with the war and economy, coupled with Sen. Barack Obama's popularity, has the House GOP running for cover. Even though polls have shown that Americans don't like congressional Democrats any more, a new internal GOP tally of House races suggests a Democratic route that could keep the Republicans in the minority for decades. A document provided to Washington Whispers from a House GOP official shows that they could lose a net 34 seats. That means the Democrats would have a 270-165 advantage in the 111th Congress. In the Senate, Republicans expect to lose also but to keep up to 44 seats, ensuring their ability to stage a filibuster.

The document provided to Whispers is no gag: It comes from one of the key House GOP vote counters. The source called it a "death list." The tally shows several different ratings of 66 House Republicans in difficult races or open seats held by retiring Republicans. "Rating 1" finds 10 Republicans "likely gone." Those districts are New York 13, Alaska, Arizona 1, Virginia 11, New York 25, Illinois 11, Florida 24, Michigan 7, Nevada 3, and North Carolina 8. Under "Rating 2," nine Republican seats are listed as "leaning Democratic." Under "Rating 3," some 22 GOP seats are listed as "true toss-up." The fourth rating, "lean Republican," finds 15 seats in the category that comes with this warning: "If there's a wave, some could be in trouble." The last "likely Republican" rating finds another 11. Only three Democratic districts are seen as "hopeful" GOP pickups. They are Florida 16, Pennsylvania 11, and Texas 22. Another 10 Democratic seats are listed as "possible" pickups. The loss of 34 House GOP seats is among the most dire predictions in Republican circles. Most analysts have suggested a drop of at least 20 seats and at most 30 seats. A key Democratic official refused to provide his own list but said, "I'd rather be us than them."

4. I am hopeful and happy, but
I also hope with all my heart that these Democrats remain true to us here at home, and not allow swollen-headed hubris, greed and/or power ruin a wonderful way to enact positive changes, and also show the ignorant that liberal is not a dirty word to poke fun of or run away from -. I also hope they understand that the changes we desire are not DLCish, but responsible changes and corrections that effect the majority of Americans and small business owners, not the wealthy, and not the large multi-corporations.

After watching Rachel Maddow last night showing Schumer and Frank's gleeful hubris, I'm hoping they get the message from someone.

I'm already crafting a letter to my Congress-critters letting them know what I expect from them. Americans have a very low opinion of Congress in general. The Republicans and their connections in the media have 2 years to work on the American people against the Congressional liberal Democrats. The Right have nothing to lose but much to gain with their trickery and lies. This means we have to be prepared by being intelligent and humble; strong and serious - President Obama needs us to be just that.

President Obama! - I love that name! - I love how it sounds! -

in the Senate. I bet a large enough majority to prevent filibusters are voting the straight Democratic ticket.

7. k&r for very good news.
I really want 61 in the Senate (Lieberman doesn't count).

But if this internal count predicts 56 Dems. in the Senate, it's probably pretty realistic and accurate. That means the projected gain of 34 seats in the House is probably realistic and accurate as well, and this is good news, indeed.

11. Sadly, it looks like the "Crap Sandwich" eating dirt bag will be re-elected.
However, I think many in the republican Reich wing will oppose him continuing in his position as minority leader.

14. Unless Ohio turns strongly blue it looks like you are stuck with him
Edited on Wed Oct-22-08 09:59 PM by theothersnippywshrub
for the foreseeable future. According to Wikipedia the last time a democrat represented the 8th district in Ohio was in the 1930's. I am sure that the 8th district boundaries have changed over the years, but your part of Ohio looks like it has been strongly republican for a long time.

The most likely scenario to defeat Boehner might be in a primary, but that likely would result in an even more loathsome and odious republican turd representing your district.

Be thankful that he will have much less power in the next Congress and therefore can do less harm to our country.

You might call his local office and ask him and his staff to vote for Obama.
