Texas may be closer than you think
I live in Denton Texas, and although we have a very liberal, fairly large college, most of those liberals are from elsewhere (good music program). The rest of Denton is very, very conservative and religious zealots. My best friend's dad is a born again christian, on of the kinda nutty ones (not as bad as the Earth is only 5000 years old ones, but still a little out there) and he goes to Denton Bible, a mega church that over half of the city of denton's practicing christians attend and has said such things as "Boycott MTV because it promotes the gay agenda." My friend's dad lives in a neighborhood right next to the church (actually moved there from N Dallas to go to said church) that is filled with people just like him. In '04, there were tons of Bush signs, almost every house, now there is one McCain sign and (gasp!) one Obama sign. We dont talk a lot of politics for obvious reasons, but I did ask him what he thought of the candidates etc. His response, "I'm not too thrilled, I think I am just going to stay home this election."

!!!!!!!!!

Apparently this thought is held amongst lots of people in my area. I have heard tell from my friend's dad and others that many life long christian conservatives are staying home this election, which at the very least, may mean Cornyn (and Burgess for my district) might be gone, and if we are lucky, the presidential race might just be close enough to scare the shit out of the GOP.

1. I say McCain wins it by 12
Which is a big accomplishment for us, seeing as how Baby Bush won Texas by 23 in 2004.

it will take time to come out of the wilderness in Texas.

2. This is just what I've been saying. Many conservatives are going
to stay home, and a lot of states are going to be a surprise.

3. I have a friend in Colleyville (not far from you, I think) and she says
the same thing, very little enthusiasm for McCain among her friends and neighbors.

4. Denton!
I grew up in that neighborhood(idiots hill), and I drove through there the other day. There are tons of Obama signs in that neighborhood. I live on the South side of Denton now, and all you see are McCain/Palin signs.

I would say that a majority of Denton is liberal, but we don't turn up in elections. I worked for the Obama campaign during the primary, and the lines for voting were tremendous, so I do agree, there is a good chance that Cornyn, Burgess, and Crownover might be moving back to this area real soon.

23. Denton Represent!
More Obama signs/stickers on cars here in North Denton.
The primary/caucus was crazy this year. Good signs.
Can we get at least a purple?

6. Totally agree.
TX is slowly, but surely, finding its way back to its democratic roots. And on top of that, when the Hispanic population becomes the majority in the next few years-look out repubs!

7. Hi DU Neighbors. I live in Corinth..We should get together on Election night.
I moved here 2 yrs ago and have little to do with anthing or anyone in this area. I remain a stranger out of choice.
No Obama signs around my neighborhood, but about 3 McCain/Burgess signs have appeared.
The one across the street from my house belongs to a pastor, so I'm not bothered by it.

Nice to have DUers so close by.
Just saying hello.

8. This was reported in Bell and McClennan Counties...
"Early voting records were smashed this week, as people in Bell and McLennan counties headed to the polls.

More than 9,300 people in the two counties cast their vote on Monday, more than any other single day of early voting.

On Monday, 5,800 people voted in Bell County and nearly 3,600 in McLennan County, a 25 percent increase over the last presidential race in 2004. "

And I was one of them~!

25. Lots of good candidates in North Texas too
I think that with the strong showing in Dallas in the 06 elections, any thing is possible. I live in the Denison/Sherman area and have seen a lot of Obama yard signs as well as Melancon yard signs. Melancon even has a new video out he is trying to get on the air. Someone else already started a thread about it here http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x7566687 go check it out.

18. Texas has been predominately republican for many years...
And I contend that it will remain that way until the generation shift. IMO. I early voted in Denton County, and from what I saw here and on TV all across the metroplex, there are WAY more elderly than young people at the booths. IMO, they are more likely to die republican than change parties. I really hope I'm wrong though.

21. I think a lot of people are too worried to even put out signs
esp in areas that have been hard hit financially.

Although some neighborhoods here in PA have Obama signs on practically every house (I live in a very Dem area), I've noticed some neighborhoods with few or no signs, along with for sale signs on many houses.
