McCain has relied on the Granite State, and its message of “Live Free or Die,” before. The state delivered him an overwhelming win the 2000 primary against President George W. Bush. This year, it revived his candidacy again and sent him on a path that eventually led to the Republican nomination.

But the battleground state, with its four electoral votes, is not looking promising for McCain come Nov. 4. An average of polls by the nonpartisan Real Clear Politics has Obama up by 9.4 percentage points. A poll by the Concord Monitor from over the weekend has Obama up by seven points.

My statement that is photoshopped is a statement about the photograph, which I have examined, not a statement that the incident never happened. Saying something is doctored doesn't speak to its original state.

The photo at issue is, in fact, heavily retouched. That was the basis of my original statement and nothing has changed.

Your video link demonstrates that the incident depicted is real, but the AP image is still heavily doctored.

The topless guys are not nearly far enough away to be in a completely different lighting environment. I believe it's a combination of two photos taken a little bit apart. resumably the photographer had a full-light photo where you could see the guys well and another photo where you could see McCain better and combined them. Probably taken only seconds apart.

This would not be the first time a stringer retouched a photo sold to a major news service... freelancers do doctor their pictures to make them clearer or more dramatic. (There was a scandal about that about a year ago.)

But photoshopped in so far as being retouched, hell yes. The body paint is too bright in comparison to the video or other people around them.

90% of the time when something is cut into a picture it would suggest fakery, and that was my initial assumption. So my first blush suggestion was, as you say, that it was faked.

But your video settles the question, and in that sense I was clearly wrong.

I will guess that the TV light coming in from the left caused unflattering or sinister under-lit shadows on the maverick boys, so a more evenly lit view of them was substituted.

I have an alternate explanation. In order for his banner to not be "shadowy", they're hitting it with brighter lights, which creates a brighter lighting area... an area the boys also happen to be standing in front of.

If something is cut into a photo one doesn't normally assume that what is cut in is a slight variation of what was there in the first place. But that appears to be the case here.

It's like if someone has a photo where a UFO is cut into the sky, but the insert turns out to be a real photo of a real UFO. Something can be faked, yet historically accurate.

I feel like a DNA expert in the OJ trial... I can only say whose blood it is. I cannot say whether it was planted on the scene.

I also have to reserve the possibility that the photographer photoshopped 'seams' around some elements only to delineate them within one original photo. If the border around a figure has a lot of hand work in it it is reasonable to assume it has been inserted, but it doesn't prove it is. It only proves that someone did a lot of hand work around the border of a figure.

It does look like it has been photoshopped but sometimes lighting can give that effect in any case those boys did stand behind McCain and the photo represents exactly what happened - whether or not the photographer enhanced the picture.

If it was retouched it wasn't done by the photographer - there wouldn't have been time. Any retouching would have had to have been done by the AP editor.
