Bachmann: Talk show appearance `big mistake'
Does anyone else find it a bit disingenuous for Bachmann to suggest she's never seen 'Hardball'?

Bachmann: Talk show appearance `big mistake'
Minn. representative regrets 'anti-American' Obama comment

updated 8:22 a.m. CT, Wed., Oct. 22, 2008

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann says she regrets using the term "anti-American" while discussing Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's views, a remark that could threaten her re-election bid.

Bachmann told the St. Cloud Times on Tuesday that she "made a big mistake" by going on MSNBC's "Hardball," a show she said she'd never seen before her appearance last week. Her statement to host Chris Matthews that Obama "may have anti-American views" drew condemnation and helped her opponent, Democrat Elwyn Tinklenberg, raise more than $1 million in just a few days.

During an interview with the Times' editorial board, Bachmann said she walked into a trap and did not bring up the term "anti-American." Still, she said, "I should not have used that phrase."

Earlier in the day, Bachmann told St. Cloud Rotary Club members she would like to "take back" the statement.

"I did not say that Barack Obama was anti-American, nor do I believe Barack Obama is anti-American. He loves his country, just as everyone in this room does," she told the crowd. "Nor did I call for an investigation of members of Congress for their pro-American or anti-American views. That is not what I said."

Bachmann said that while she didn't question Obama's patriotism, "I'm very concerned about Barack Obama's views. I don't believe that socialism is a good thing for America."

The Rotary Club luncheon was her first formal public appearance since Friday's interview, in which Matthews asked Bachmann if she believed Obama held anti-American views.

Her response was: "Absolutely. I'm very concerned that he may have anti-American views. That's what the American people are concerned about. That's why they want to know what his answers are."

Bachmann said Tuesday she probably should have watched "Hardball" to see what it was like before she went on it.

1. Well, dumbass, the show isn't called "Softball"
Even if you've never ever ever seen it... haven't you at least HEARD about it?

Also, Matthews didn't do a damn thing except give her enough room and rope to hang herself. Which she did in SPECTACULAR fashion.

That little twit can fuck off.

15. It doesn't matter if bachman doesn't even know what
"hard" means. She had the floor and went with it.

I remember DUers complaining that Tweety didn't do anything to counteract her and others saying he was doing the right thing by giving her all the rope she needed..paraphrasing.

35. I think Tweety did the exact right thing.
If he had countered her TOO hard she might not have gone as far as she did. All he did was ask questions prompting her to expand further then sat back and let her set about digging her own grave.

I am NOT a Tweety fan, but I think he did GREAT in this case. And the results demonstrate that.

I mean, she thinks of George W. Bush as a paragon of manhood.

2. But, Bachman has appeared on "Hardball"....
other times--before the episode where she made those 'anti-American' remarks.

She's familiar with the show.

She's been on multiple times, right?

If a show is named "Hardball" and it's on during prime time... you have to think it isn't porn.

5. The Irony Is That We Were All Slamming Matthews For Letting Her Spew Her Hate...
Without challenging her! I guess that damn liberal media is at fall for not telling Bachmann to shut up. The right wing depends on the media to shut them down before they embarass themselves, and I guess by letting Bachmann spew her hate without interruption, Matthews displayed liberal bias.

Edited on Wed Oct-22-08 12:11 PM by BeyondGeography
He did do a nice bit of maneuvering at the end to get her to question the patriotism of the entire Congress, but all she had to do was say, "I'm here to talk about Brack Obama," and that would have been the end of it.

She's not regretting her remark, but that she's regretting going on Hardball. In other words, trying to spin it that Matthews goaded her into making the remark she did.

19. She has reputation as a camera whore
I heard in the past that the most dangerous place to stand was between Michele Bachman and a TV camera. Now, for the past several days, she was refusing almost all interviews.

Her her interview on Hardball was great because she was just allowed to spout off. It wasn't like she was asked leading questions and trapped into agreeing to something she didn't mean.

and what she spews in GOP back rooms in private. How dare that show expose her true wingnut McCarthyite self.

By the way, anyone in politics knows who Chris Matthews is and what Hardball is all about. When you're one of the perennial hosts of election night on TV and when you've interviewed virtually everyone who is anyone in Washington, a Congresswoman like Bachmann knows exactly who Tweety is. This Bachmann creature has again shown what a liar she is.

25. Chris better confirm or deny her statement about never appearing on Hardball
before. She's one of the GOP media darlings, so put me down as one is finds it hard to believe she never appeared on his show before last week. And it's even more difficult to believe she wasn't even familiar with it.

26. More from Bachmann

When Stephanie Miller had a commercial this AM I scanned the dial and happened upon Bachman being interviewed by Lauara Ingarahm about this.

Here is what Bachman said in a nutshell

-They (Dems) are about censorship
-We (Republicans) must stand up for freedom
-If Obama is elected we won't recognize 'our country' in 10 years

Ingaram said
-Democrats are just mad because their viewpoint is being challenged and people are questioning them

I emailed S.Miller's show and maybe they'll pickup on the incredible hypocrisy, especially since Ingaram was so hateful about the Dixie Chicks and had said, they 'should be help accountable for their woreds'.

This really irritates me. I have a feeling it irritates a lot of people. Allowing Bush's tax cuts to expire and return to the level they were when Bill Clinton was in office and we had a budget surplus is not "socialism." I'm so sick of this disingenuous bullshit.

37. Um ... no. The "appearance" wasn't the big mistake
Suggesting that we should have a witch hunt to determine which members of Congress are "pro-American" and which members are "anti-American" was the big mistake!

These people never cease to amaze me! They never see anything wrong with what they said, it's always where they said it, when they said it or the way it was "twisted" by other people that's the problem. :eyes:
