The buckle of the bible belt. More liberals here than you would think. What we have found out is people are afraid to question the McShame campaign about Palin. Kind-of a crowd mentality thing, they are not sure they are allowed to question what the hell is wrong with this woman and why would they choose her. I am hoping that they will vote for Obama but lie to their friends about who they voted for.

This Alabama liberal sees the truth in pretty much all the south-bashing that goes on around here.

I've never heard anyone allege that the southern states are completely devoid of good, committed liberals... only that we are frighteningly outnumbered by mouth-breathing, narrow-minded, bible-thumping bigots.

Which is 100% true.

A friend in Boston sent me the Dear Red States letter and I must admit it stung a bit. We are in this together.
In a way, it is fun being able to engage in heated debate with some of the most enchanted Republicans and tell them to their faces that the party they love so well is morally and intellectually bankrupt. "W" is their best and brightest.
My brothers in blue states must live relatively sedate political lives. Pity.

17. We love you Southern Democrats, keep the Hope alive !
I grew up in Atlanta. I lived there when Jimmy Carter became president. When I was there, everyone around was a yellow-dog democrat. I did not know any differently. I also did not know, until I moved away when I became an adult, that "yellow-dog" is not a nice term. I was shocked when I saw GA go red. Fundamentalism had taken hold, thanks to Karl Rove and Ralph Reed.

I just don't think long-horns and prairie dogs and cowboys are the South. That's west....

But of course TX likes to think it's the South, but don't tell the snobs in VA (the "real" VA of course!)

Regionalisms are just stereotypes anyway. Stereotypes have but a grain of truth in them.

And it's become so much more difficult with Palin running.

I love the South - I was born in Florida, where mom still lives; my daughter is a UA graduate (Roll Tide!) and lives near Birmingham. A lot of the holdover racist/bigot mentality is from laziness and ignorance in that area. She works one person at a time, changing red to purple to blue.

Thank you, DU Southerners! Without you, and those like you, the IQ of some states would plummet to amoeba level.

I remember the big party for her birthday (100th?) in the late 80's. New Yorkers went nuts with that one. And so many good clubs - not to mention theatre, opera (I'm seeing Madam Butterfly tomorrow night), restaurants, etc. I was raised by two NY snobs so I really didn't stand a chance coming out any other way.

61. The museums!!!
How did I forget the museums?!!! There is currently a Van Gogh exhibit at Modern Art that I still have to get tickets for (it's running until January if you want to make a trip down!!). I love doing the touristy thing now and then. Especially around the holidays - 5th Avenue all lit up, the windows all decorated, the big tree - Oh, I can't wait. I went to school upstate for my first year (Brockport) but after 12 feet of snow, I did the rest of my time in college at Arizona State!! But New York has everything (statewide). Mountains, beaches, beautiful lakes all over. Tis a thing of beauty.

Tho "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy" might lose something in regional translation, any music emanating from the stage and screen in the last century can be traced to new yawk (even Paul Anka). Blues, jazz, and rNr are really African-American inventions, and jazz is a direct by-product of northern cities:

The virulent racism that had characterized American culture in the 1890s began to relax somewhat after the first world war, at least in intellectual circles. African-American migrants, drawn by wartime jobs, found a degree of creative freedom and fellowship in the North unheard of in Jim Crow Dixie. We remember this cultural flowering today as "the Harlem Renaissance," a period when African-American artists, writers and poets produced works that celebrated their own traditions and cultures. In the twenties white Americans found this culture increasingly fascinating, and in New York adventurous whites made their way to Harlem, where they heard jazz bands play in segregated clubs.

http://chnm.gmu.edu/courses/hist409/jazz/jazz.html

(on edit: I'd also dispute the punk label, the American form barely tinkers with the British recipe)

126. Re: punk
that's the difference
American form Vs British formula
And the American form came first; The Stooges, The Velvets, The New York Dolls, Richard Hell, Patti Smith, Ramones, etc were American (not Johnny Rottencomelastelies)

Also
"jazz is a direct by-product of northern cities"
Really, now?
The city of New Orleans and ALL music historians would take exception to that

What? Are you next going to claim that Tennessee Williams and William Faulkner were actually born in the fucking Bronx?

184. Williams lived in NYC for @ 10-15 years...
the rest of the time in New Orleans and Key West

My point was that artists have to move TO NYC because it is a ...ahem...commercial marketplace, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are FROM NYC. There is nothing special in the water there that nourishes an embryonic artistic soul. It's just a place they have to go to in order to sail their boats.
Jazz for example; none of the significant figures (Armstrong, Parker, Coltrane, Davis, Coleman, Monk, Mingus) were native New Yorkers

Obviously, there are some native New Yorkers who are significant artists...such as the gentleman in my avatar :)

197. I still think Faulker and Williams are slightly ironic examples
Although, like Faulkner, Williams spent much of his adult life in New York, his work focuses on the Southern experience.

http://www.etsu.edu/haleyd/twbio.html

I took issue with "The South is where American music comes from" as it struck a similar chord to the chauvinism we've heard lately about real/patriotic regions of America, but even (and especially) St. Louis can't be overlooked in the scheme of jazz, so neither the north nor the south can realistically mount an exclusive claim to "where American music comes from" (as we seem to agree re: the Velvet Underground, even though they might have performed polka or acid jazz were it not for the Mississippi Blues).

none of the significant figures (Armstrong, Parker, Coltrane, Davis, Coleman, Monk, Mingus) were native New Yorkers

Thelonious moved to Manhattan when he was 5 (according to Wiki, I actually thought he was from Philly for some reason, probably "Monk in Philadelphia"; Coltrane apparently moved there in his teens), but Sonny Rollins and Fats Waller were NYC born and raised so I wouldn't say "none".

34. Direct from an expert in Upstate South Carolina...
My mother!

Got this email from her yesterday.

Please don't rag on Mom's grammar/spelling, you will really piss me off. She's 77 years old and still learning the Internets. Not to mention that, like most Moms, she sacrificed more than I will ever know so I could be better educated than her. Though I'm still not sure the poor woman got the better part of that deal.

Edited for possible legal reasons:

I will be glad for the Bush bunch to get out of the office, I don't like either of them running, but I sure don't want Mccain, things are really bad here, car lots are closing down, houses being give back, people can't pay their bills.

A man in PLACENAME REDACTED ran a finance company, last week he got gone, was missing almost 2 weeks, the Sheriff's Dept. an lot of people was trying to find him, he was hid in a big barn in his back yard,(hid behind hay in the back of the barn) NAME REDACTED, an some more people I know had all their money in his company,he paid more interest they said, they lost all they had , he owes about 5 million to creditors.

Thanks. Sometimes it is hard being the red-headed stepchild of the Democratic party, but we carry on in our quiet desperation like fine southern women (and men) do.

Ok, enough with the Moonlight and Magnolias.

Thanks for the love DU! It really is hard fighting the good fight here sometimes.

There are growing Democratic pockets in Texas: Austin, Dallas, and soon Houston. In a short time, our population will be majority Hispanic. At that point, the state will be shifting over to the Dem column. Believe me, it's gonna happen.

220. Ditto, RebelOne. I live a bit north of you and have been
afraid to put out an Obama yard sign or stick on a bumper sticker. Yesterday at work, all the folks in my department were discussing how Obama was fulfilling the prophecy of the book of Revelations in the bible. They sincerely feel that he is the antichrist, is a Muslim, and is secretly pretending to be a Democrat. They are VERY AFRAID. I may be the only person in the whole hospital who will vote for Obama with the exception of a couple of doctors.

62. What cured me of anti-Southern sentiment
A National Science Foundation summer student on an archaeological dig with a group in which he was the only black person was refused service at a restaurant--in ILLINOIS! The other tired and thirsty students looked for someplace else, much to their credit. That woke me up to the fact that racism is all over the place, and it might be a good idea to look to my own back yard instead of relying on stereotypes. This was in 1963.

But there is hope. It looks like my district (05) will elect another dem to the house (Parker Griffith) to replace our outgoing dem (Bud Cramer). It looks like a longshot for Vivian Davis Figures but my vote will be cast for her. Things are looking up all over this country. leftinalabama.com definitely helps to provide like minded locals while DU helps me feel like a part of the national progressive community.

in Blue Caswell. Lots of rural Dems up here.

We've gotten a lot of positive comments from Republicans on our "Vets for Obama" stickers on our pickup and car, saying they've had enough of the chimperor. Well, I'll be. There's hope yet.

For the rest of y'all, NC is a lot bluer than you think. We typically have a Dem governor and State House. It's pretty progressive for a southern state. The arts are alive here and so are southern graces.

And we do appreciate the love! :grouphug:

We're trying!! Maybe at sometime in the future we will be considered at **least** a battleground state and get a rally like the ones we see on TV in the real swing/battleground states leading up to Election Day! It was cool to see TX Dems actually "matter" on the national level back in the primaries! We ARE down here :-)

The first two have not realized their free thinking potential, the last are just plain greedy.

I come here to deprogram daily. It is not that hard being a liberal in a red state to me. I think it energizes and inspires me to be more informed and focused on the issues that are important to me. Whenever I talk politics with friends, neighbors, etc. I often find that they are clueless on what is really going on in the world. It feels good to leave them questioning what they hear from the wingnut side. I do find that almost everyone that I work with is voting dem this time and many of these people have voted repug their whole lives. Y'all keep up the great work and just remember that when we are celebrating on 11/04, there are a lot of dems in the south that are shedding tears of happiness too.:grouphug:

My wife early voted today, and I will on Saturday. (No foolishness, but then the R's think they have this area sewed up. Whatever.) We live in one of the reddest districts in Louisiana, which will probably be the one holdout state if Obama pulls a 49 state EC landslide. As the Rude Pundit wrote recently, no wonder nobody talked about Katrina at the debates. Oh well, we keep the candle burning anyway...

14,000+ new voters in Buncombe; 98 percent Dems or unaffiliated
NEWS
David Forbes | 1 day, 5 hours ago

According to statistics released by the Buncombe County Board of Elections, 14,415 new voters have registered since early February. The vast majority (98 percent) of the new voters are registered as Democrats (7,355) or unaffiliated (6,765). The number of registered Republicans stayed roughly the same, going up by 186 new voters.

188. I'm Southern but I don't blame the rest of the country for being tempted to give up
on the South completely sometimes, because frankly most of it seems pretty much beyond redemption, politically, to me, too.

Obviously, the enlightened and the unenlightened both live side-by-side scattered all throughout the country, in every state, so sweepingly panning the entire population of any region is so inaccurate as to be ridiculous. But I am more than ready to acknowledge that our demographic ratios down here -- I'm a native Virginian (and both my parents were Tennesseeans) -- skew noticably worse in the direction of "anti-fancy book learnin' and damn proud of it" than any of America's other regions do. I feel like I know willful ignorance when I see it. And I categorically refuse to defend or excuse it.

Now, true, we definitely do have an authentic and distinctive "sense of place" down here -- something novelists relish and misguided romantics in other regions sometimes seem to envy. Let's be clear: there is an awful lot about the southern "regional personality" that is not to be admired.

I'm honestly on board with those folks who opine that the South should be a separate country. The rest of you really did screw up in 1861. The smart response would've been "Secede? Sounds good to us! Don't let the barn door hit you on the way out!" I suspect, though, that damned hotheaded South Carolina's having started a shooting war at Sumter closed whatever remote possibility that might have existed for a peaceful secession; once you're shot at, any nation has to shoot back.

But the issue definitely should be re-opened, in my view. An actual majority down here, I think, really do want a theocracy, and they are going to stay as pissed and hostile and disruptive as hell for as long as they don't have it. The rest of America, sanely, is going to have none of that, though. So what's left to do? Do we want the hateful Culture War to go on forever? I'd vote for letting the numerous Southerner agitators have their theocracy. Call it the New Confederate States of Christian America. If the South doesn't secede from you Northerners, then you should simply secede from it. Let this part of the continent go without universal health care forever if that's what the residents of the CSCA want. Let it discard Social Security and so much else. Let it treat its less privileged people like shit. Let the CSCA be xenophobic, among many other kinds of -phobic, and puffed up with military bravado, belligerence, and foreign interventionism. Let it play, within reasonable limits, the ridiculous international bully. Let it live out all of the many terrible ideas that seem to be in such common currency down here.

It's not like the rest of you didn't try to help. You did, for centuries. Many down here have thrown every form of social progressiveness right back in your faces, and called you godless socialist babykillers for your trouble. Some people, living in some places, just don't want to be helped, thank you very much. I honestly think everyone would be better off if the South were simply allowed to go its own, very colorful and distinctive way in the world.

Of course I know it's not really likely to happen, anytime soon anyway. But, if I had my druthers, that's how I'd solve a whole slate of long-term problems that seem unlikely to ever be resolved any other way.

These ramblings probably are are too strong of opinions to be voicing on just a 2nd post. But, oh well. (I will throw in that I do have a sense of humor about it all, too, if that's any help.)

I should get back to the intended purpose of this thread. Yes, I understand and agree with the immediate goal: Let's keep the energy up and deliver my state of Virginia, and North Carolina, and Florida, all three into Barack's EV column on Nov. 4. My yammering ideas about splitting the nation asunder into two (wisely divorced and happier) countries will keep until after we elect Obama.

I will happily tell you the early voting is in FULL SWING. The polling places here look busier today than they did on Nov 4, 2004.

Now, I will not lie, The MCCain folks are braying like donkeys, whipped into rabid frenzy by these hateful mega-churches we have down here. However, there are a lot of people who are for Obama and being VERY open about it, something I did NOT see last time for Kerry. Then again, we have a lot of people who thought they were middle class up until recently, when they got their wake-up call courtesy of foreclosures and outsourcing to India. It also helps that Charlie Crist, in his quest to get the VP nod, did everything short of offer MCCain his liver as lunch. I can tell you that McCain is probably really regretting choosing Sarah P. here, as she is exactly the sort of woman that ticks a lot of the locals off. Her arrogance is hayseed enough to tick off the urban types, and somehow way too uppity to be accepted by the rural types. The only people she carries are the church crowds. The flip side of this is that if the GOP wins this state, it will ONLY be because the Church types showed up, so Sarah can play that card for 2012. Also, this is the home of the PUMA. I hate to be mean, but we do have a ton of "liberals" who feel Hillary must be avenged, and that Obama equals some sort of apocalypse where Israel is destroyed. Joe Lieberman played well to this crowd, and actually was a sort of deal-sealer.

Memo to Connecticut, can you PLEASE punish that Benedict Arnold? You know if anyone in Congress turns sides, it will be that little worm. I would call him a whore, but whores earn their money. Joe is at best, a low grade pimp!

They disappeared. The next day there was one Repug sign in its place and the neighbor's Obama sign had been torn to shreds. On a sidestreet, off the one just described, the neighbor said four years ago he mistakenly put a Kerry sticker on his favorite car and woke up one morning to find his fender smashed in with a bat. So he's holding off until election day until he puts his sign out in his yard; and likely will not put an Obama sign on his car...We are going through an historical change here.

195. Another "thank you!" from Florida.
Sometimes it's hard coming to DU with all of the anti-South stuff posted. I've got a pretty thick hide, but it does get to you.

FTR, I don't TECHNICALLY consider Florida the South (I'm from Georgia originally), geography notwithstanding.

203. did someone say puppy?

Seriously ... thank you Southern DU'ers. :yourock:

BTW, while I was looking for a puppy pic to post here, I found this silly but funny text that came with the picture. The website is http://frecklescassie.wordpress.com/2007/05/31/puppies-at-the-white-house/

A boy selling puppies out of a little red wagon camps out in front of the White House…George Bush, delighted at the boy’s entrepreneurship, strolls out to speak with him. “Say, what kind of puppies are those?” says Bush. “Republican puppies, sir,” says the boy. George Bush, delighted with the boy’s response, hands him a ten-dollar bill.

A week later, the same boy with the same puppies camps out in front of the White House again. Sensing a possible photo opportunity, George Bush approaches the boy again. “What kind of puppies were those again?” asks Bush. “Democratic puppies, sir,” says the boy.

Bush says, “What? Last week you said they were Republican puppies.” “Yes sir,” replies the boy, “but they’ve opened their eyes since then.”

it's silly, but i love it. :)

204. Thank you, Southern DU'ers
What I love the most about Southern Liberals, like dear Molly Ivins and Ann Richards, may they rest in peace, and Jim Hightower, and Bill Moyers, and others, and not to mention all my liberal friends in Mobile, is their ability to keep their sense of humor and their optimism against all odds while deep in enemy territory. I get way to morose about things, and I have a lot to learn from them.

206. I love Southerners. Here's the story.
I was treated so kindly and well by everyone I met as a poor college kid stuck in Biloxi 30 years ago I thought I had died and gone to Heaven. I was fed and housed and storied - y'all can talk some interesting stories - and for almost 100 days traveling back North to Syracuse and no one would take a penny from me because they knew I didn't have any and they relished the opportunity to treat a guest as family. And I'm talking both the black folks and the white folks that just reached out to me like I was their kid. One night I was sleeping on a bed with the older son in a family who really couldn't afford to send the 18 year old to college and he put the only blanket he had on me because it had gotten a little chilly. I could see the guy was both freezing and sleeping. So I put my coat on and put the blanket back on him and when I woke up the whole family was standing around watching me sleep. The guy's father - former Coast Guard guy like my Dad - was so impressed he invited me to Charlotte whenever I was in the area - and he said he would always treat me as a son. This was heady stuff for a kid born a few blocks down from Springsteen in Jersey - poor but taught right by my parents that you treat strangers of any type as guests and with respect. It was a tough racial era back then and blacks and whites were not getting along great in Central Jersey and there I was bedding with an 18 year old guy who was a black guy who looked like a professional athlete who was just kind and cool and grateful I was there. I just didn't really get it and had I not had to sleep with my older brothers (not a bad thing in the winter, really) for most of my young life I think i would have flipped out. Sure enough when I got back to school - having lost almost 6 weeks of the semester, I got the older son a junior custodian job at my college. Somehow my dad and his dad figured out how to get the college to do that. Don't you know that kid spent the next ten years studying like crazy - he never git tired and never lost his charm or his deep accent either - and got accepted to medical school the same year I finally did. And he's been my best friend for 30 years. His grandma from Southern Alabama sent me peach pies and the best ham I have ever eaten for for almost fifteen years after that up until she died. Which only forced my grandma to hand crochet me slippers for me and my friends for years. I can't tell you how much I appreciated everyone I met from the South and how they became part of my live. Sure, they'd all say don't mind that drunkard or that ill mannered group of people when we encountered some fools, but most people never see past those to the wise, generous, polite and hospitable people I met. And God Bless every granparent because we wouldn't have so many geeat kids and grandkids running around without them. That's just a fact.

Mitch might just get ditched here! That would be great news! I know a lot of liberal minded folks here in Lexington, but I think there is hope for our state bubbling up in other areas. My folks (lifelong Dems that are McCain's age) live in the eastern part of the state, the Appalachian region, and they brought a friend to Lexington this week for a Dr. appointment and I met them all for lunch. This little lady was a fire-brand for Obama, she just LOVES him! After we talked for a while over lunch my Dad pointed out that she was a lifelong Republican too. The lady told me about some conversations she had with people at her church, folks that won't make the preacher mad by saying they are for Obama, but when they found out she was they made sure to talk to her. I have hope that people are starting to slowly wake up!

And to my Vol friends from Tenn. in the posts above, the SEC is weird this year! But despite half the UK defense getting injured against Ark, GO BLUE (a phrase that works for me in all areas of life right now)!

I just wonder how these supposed Christians can talk like they do and still go to church on Sundays. I will be so glad when this is over, I think I'm going to take a vacation that week after I vote.

It's not quite so bad in the larger towns. Guilford, Forsyth, Wake, Durham, Orange, Mecklenburg, New Hanover and Ashe counties all usually go blue by a few percent. Some VERY rural counties in the northeastern part of the state and in the mountains go blue, too.

270. I'm so tired of receiving Repub. FWD emails!!! (Tennessean)
The latest claimed the following passage came from Audacity of Hope:

"I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

The following is my Reply to All (I don't know half of the damn people on the list):

***

Obama did not make the statement attributed to him in this email.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/ownwords.asp

The actual passage from his book is as follows:

“In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”

Hopefully none of you would be for the renunciation of Arab and Pakistani Americans’ citizenship.

This BS trashing Arabs and Muslims as if these terms are synonymous with the word terrorist is growing tiresome.

Would you renounce the citizenship of this woman who gave her son because of her faith? That is the definition of un-American.

Please exclude me from any forward emails such as this garbage.

Damn I grow tired of having to let these people in on how friggin' ignorant and gullible they are! Just had to vent...

Born and raised in Virginia and lived eight years near New Orleans LA. I'm a Democrat and proudly support Senator Obama.

Over the years I've been seeing real progress and things that give me hope. The trouble making haters are a distinct minority that get smaller with each passing day. It helps many are ancient and simply dying off :P

In closing, "Yaller dogs bark!" :)
