An Open Letter to Sen. John McCain
Senator McCain,

When you ran for the Republican Nomination in the year 2000, many of us, even Democrats, were outraged by the treatment you received in the South Carolina Primary in 2000. You had respect among Americans of all political persuasions --left, right, and center. That respect was well-earned through a lifetime of service to your country. We may not have agreed with you, but we respected you.

That respect is disappearing rapidly, Senator. But it is not necessarily gone forever.

It looks rather obvious that you are going to lose this election badly. If the polls look as poor for you next week at this time, it will afford you an historical opportunity to serve your country and regain your good name. Simply make a speech something like this:

"My fellow Americans, these are dark days for our Nation. We are fighting two wars. We are under terrorist threat. Our economy is sinking rapidly, perhaps historically. We are much too divided as a Nation. This must stop. Now. The stakes are too high, the danger too great to continue partisan bickering.

This is difficult for me to do. But my motto this campaign has been "County First." It is time for me to live up to that motto.

It is obvious to me that America wants change. And that Senator Obama is whom you will choose on Tuesday to effect that change. Therefore, I am going to do something unprecedented and throw my support behind Senator Obama now, before the election; and I encourage you to throw your support behind him, too. He'll need your help and support in the difficult days that follow.

Thank you for your support over the years. And God Bless America."

Senator McCain, this is probably the last election you'll run in. You can be remembered as just another losing politician --and one who threw away the good will of a lifetime in pursuit of the Presidency. Or, you can be remembered as the man who encouraged America to come together (at cost to himself) at a critical moment in history. You would again become an American Hero.

Give it some thought, Senator. It costs you nothing and may well heal America. And you are the ONLY man in America with this power right now.

1. The 28% would hang him in effigy.

And worse.
But you're right, he could redeem himself somewhat by doing something simple like that.
He would gain back the little bit of respect that I once had for him.
Of course, this is not going to happen, but it's nice to dream!

2. Yes, sometimes you have to accept the inevitable and the math. It would be healthy for him.
