Woman quits job at call center over anti-Obama script
WESTON, W.Va. -- Chaylee Cole, a student at Fairmont State University, lost her part-time job in Weston last Friday after refusing to make telephone calls attacking Barack Obama.

McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee were paying for the calls, according to a "work paper" handed to Cole and her co-workers at the Weston offices of 1.2.1 Direct Response, a company based in Philadelphia.

...

The "work paper" told callers to say:

"Hello, I'm calling for John McCain and the RNC because you need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers (airs), whose organization bombed the US Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home, and killed Americans.

"And Democrats will enact an extreme leftist agenda if they take control of Washington. Barack Obama and his Democrat allies lack the judgment to lead our country. This call was paid for by McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee."

1. I would have quit, too. Proudly.
Unfortunate for any co-worker who couldn't afford to quit, though.

7. No no no.
Keep the job. Make the calls and say 'vote Obama.' Then take the money and donate it to Obama. Screw them!

21. Sorry, didn't mean to rain on your parade.
But I've worked some of those jobs. You never know when they're listening, and they like it that way.

3. It's wonderful to read of people being heroes in their own quiet way. Thank you, Chaylee!
If I was ever inclined to buy into the "pity poor John McCain" meme, all I would have to do is recall the filth his campaign is championing.

6. I wonder what they pay. THEY HAVE TO PAY??????
At our Dem office, and at the Obama office upstairs, we phone bank out of dedication and genuine enthusiasm. But McKKKain is paying his phone people?

10. This isn't at the local campaign office.
It's at for-profit call center. They pay pretty well for a college student that can probably only work part time.

(And if I remember correctly, there is only one McCain/Palin office in West Virginia, in Charleston, about 125 miles from Chaylee's home. There are twelve Obama/Biden offices in the state. Don't give up on us yet!)

14. 121 Direct Response is based in Philadelphia.
According to their website:

1 2 1 Direct Response (1 2 1) is a full-service direct response consulting, idea development, and campaign execution organization. With over 360 outbound and inbound contact center stations; a full-service direct mail design, printing, fulfillment, and mailing facility; and direct response expertise in nonprofit and commercial direct marketing, 1 2 1 can provide its clients with turnkey direct response service excellence.

I think that most of their work is business-to-business or business-to-consumer.

15. With a rap sheet like that I don't see how they could pass on one of the most lucrative...
applications of their resources i.e. a presidential election cycle, plus; they certainly seem prepared to deploy script brought right through the front door by clients.

9. Good for her! They'll end up sticking the weirdest shit in your hands & act like you *have*...
to read it but you don't. She didn't have to be part of the problem and she knew it. I did hear that as a taped robo call script on Schultz today and it nearly ruined my Panda Express experience the bastards!!

19. Great idea!
There is a Obama/Biden campaign offices in Fairmont, where she is going to school. There isn't an office in Weston, where she was working, but there is an office in Clarksburg, halfway between the two towns.

23. She's a student
having a job for two weeks means she'll have a paycheck for two weeks. That's better than no paycheck and no job.

fwiw, my nephew made phone calls for Obama a few weekends ago. He met a guy that invited him to a party where he met another guy that recommended him for a job.

25. A lot of this call center work
has been farmed out to West Virginia. Cheap labor (well, cheap compared to most of the rest of the U.S.), stable workforce (not many other available jobs, so not a lot of job hopping), American accent (okay, Appalachian accent, but more familiar-sounding for many Americans than Hindu accent). Which would be your choice -- coal miner or call center worker?
