Ambinder: Republicans Disgusted By RNC Spending On Palin

Republicans Disgusted By RNC Spending On Palin

"With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it's remarkable that we're spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses. It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign." --McCain-Palin spokesperson Tracey Schmitt on this Politico story.

There is already an attempt to blame the media -- as in, the liberal media would have looked askance at Palin if she wasn't clad in Neiman Marcus, but this won't wash. Republicans, RNC donors and at least one RNC staff member have e-mailed me tonight to share their utter (and not-for-attribution) disgust at the expenditures.

This sort of spending is without precedent -- the closest approximation for any campaign I've ever covered is make-up expenses for television interviews and commercial shoots -- , and Schmitt's weakly defensive response tonight indicates that the campaign is deeply embarrassed by it and has nothing to say in their defense. Spokespeople have clammed up, a sure sign that they're trying to figure out who authorized the expenses and who knew about them. Did Palin wear all of the clothing? Where is it kept?

The Democrats are going to have a lot more fun with this than is prudent, but the heat for this story will come from Republicans who cannot understand how their party would do something this stupid ... particularly (and, it must be said, viewed etroactively) during the collapse of the financial system and the probable beginning of a recession

Here is the original story

RNC shells out $150K for Palin fashion

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14805.html

The Republican National Committee has spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August.

According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74.

The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September.

The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup through September after reporting no such costs in August.

The cash expenditures immediately raised questions among campaign finance experts about their legality under the Federal Election Commission's long-standing advisory opinions on using campaign cash to purchase items for personal use.

Politico asked the McCain campaign for comment, explicitly noting the $150,000 in expenses for department store shopping and makeup consultation that were incurred immediately after Palin’s announcement. Pre-September reports do not include similar costs.

7. I love the notion that some poor homeless woman somewhere is going to be walking around..
...downtown Manhattan in a $20,000 dress.

It will never happen of course. What "charity" are these clothes going to again?

I suppose there are charities that lend clothes to women in shelters who are going on job interviews....those are going to be some snazzy women! A lot of the clothes aren't even interview-esque though...it's such a weaksauce excuse.

Was it Carl Cameron who falsely reported that Michelle Obama ordered lobster in a hotel room she wasn't in??
Let's see them talk this up the way they talk up shit about Democrats. Bet this story will disappear in no time.

Nancy Reagan got all her clothes for free. Designers were willing to donate them because they hoped for free publicitiy.

Why can't the McCain camp be more frugal?

10. I understand why a candidate has to look good, but it soesn't mean
she had to shop at Neiman Marcus and Saks! I remember reading about McNuts Ferrigamo's and in the same article they said Obama buys his suits off the rack. They aren't SHEAP SUITS...cost around $350...but he looks great wearing them. McNuts wears much more expensive suits, and still doesn't look GREAT! Neither does Shrub, and his are all custom.

Sarah has a good body, and she would look just fine in clothes that cost 1/4th the price the campaign paid!

But a clothing allowance (for her AND her family) on the RNC? That's just what makes this seem shady and odd.

21. Hart Schaffner Marx suits -- union made in the U.S.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-thu-obama-suit-aug28,0,3593154.story

<snip>
When Sen. Obama steps onto the stage in Denver on Thursday night to accept the Democratic nomination for president, he plans to wear a classic two-button, navy, merino wool and cashmere suit from Chicago-based Hartmarx Corp., the company said. The largest suitmaker in the U.S. has sold suits to Obama over the years and, at the presidential hopeful's request, sent two tailors to his Kenwood home earlier this month to custom-make a suit for the historic speech.

The company's highest-end Hickey Freeman suit brand is made in Rochester, N.Y., but Obama opted for the Hart Schaffner Marx label made in Des Plaines at a union shop. The team made the suit in four days.

<end snip>

Can't wait for the freepers to pick up on the MARX.

But a clothes bill like this is too damn far. You can buy very nice suits, for men or women, for under three hundred dollars, and even then she shouldn't have to charge them to the donors.

30. It should NEVER have been charged to the donors! If Cindy wanted to
foot the bill to help John win, that's fine! But the thing that pisses me off AGAIN is the damn double standard! Ohhhh how awful it was that Edwards got a $400 haircut and it was paid out of campaign funds!!!!! But it's OK for little Sarah to spend $150,000 of campaign funds to try to LOOK GOOD! BTW, who's paying the bill for the $5,000 makeup artist to do McNuts makeup to camouflage his scars?

It is simply unacceptable for them to spend money that their supporters gave them in good faith on things like this. I suppose I thought that very minor charges would be acceptable, given the demands society puts on anyone who appears on TV reguarly, but this is really a terrible use of the public's money.

11. not to mention the kids traveling at Alaskan expense
and her charging the state for living expenses in her own home, I'd say Palin has had governments/GOP pay for close to a half-million dollars (or more) for her personal comfort over the last 2 years - this over and above the perks/salary that normally come with her office.

Incredible.

I can just see it. Due to the unfair pressures generated by Obama's campaign, and tough media interviews by Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, Palin was forced to engage in $150,000 of retail therapy.

Did she carry out all her official duties in sweat pants and a t-shirt?

But I could see her needing some new clothes. She needs outfits that cost in the thousands?

Then again, what do I care how the RNC wastes their money? Spend, baby, spend!

she'd have stuck to her Carharrts and bunny boots. She's no more "small-town" than McCain; shops at Nordstrom in Anchorage, on-line with Neiman-Marcus, etc.

Glad I'm comfortable in my jeans and sweaters; Ms. Palin is no Alaskan by Interior (or any other true Alaskan) standards!

Probably used some of the bucks to outfit her pregnant daughter. She'd have done better to have the child educated instead of dragging her all over the place campaigning. Poor kids, THEM I feel sorry for.

Sarah and First Dude have a lot to answer for. Public sentiment up here is getting very negative toward Caribou Barbie and her ilk.
