Sarah Palin CURED my Grandmother's Racism..... WILL VOTE OBAMA!!!
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 08:29 PM by RollWithIt
This is groundbreaking. I grew up in Ohio. My Nona (Italian Grandmother) is the sweetest little 81 year old crazy grandma you'll ever meet. She's always been extremely loving, batty, and naturally lovable kind of Nona you could ever have. 81 years old. I know that's a weird description, but hey, I love her. She's recently widowed as my grandfather passed away last year. So she's alone at home for the first time in her life and I call her at least once week but I'd gotten distracted with work lately (I live in Florida now) and hadn't spoken with her in about a month (BAD!).

Anyways, I called her today. The last time we spoke she was still openly talking about blacks and how even though she had always voted Democratic, she didn't want to vote for Obama (she was in love with Hillary). 180 degree change.

Quotes:

"That Palin woman winked like she was a prostitute."

"McCain has something growing off of his face."

"McCain is talking like he's in a bar with his best friends and it is scary."

"If something happens to Obama it will be horrible for our country, worse than Kennedy."

So people, I am 32 years old. From early childhood I remember my Nona as 96% loving Grandmother and 4% cringeworthy N-Word Hater. She grew up in a bad area of Akron that was racially segregated between Italians and blacks.

MCCAIN HAS CURED MY GRANDMOTHER'S RACISM!!!!! I can't believe it. I'm in shock.

12. It appears that once again, UP may be UP.
This is very much what I've been predicting all along. At first Obama wasn't "Kucinich" enough for me. But then I began to see what he was doing. And it is working.

Obama Mojo.

He instills confidence in people who otherwise would NEVER support "that one." She even brought up how he was going to visit his sick grandma and how she saw a picture of her on CNN. She didn't even mention race at that point. It was unsaid but totally clear, at least to me. She actually thought about it, she had to. And it was powerful for her I guess.

16. My Dad passed in March
He was 79 and had been raised in South Carolina. He was a good Dad, but made me cringe with some of his racial statements. He didn't say N*****r, but used code words.

He was 100% behind Hillary, but not Obama. He sent me crap from his buddies claiming Obama was Muslim.

I just wonder what he would say now with McCain wanting to "reform" Social Security and the winking bimbo from Alaska. Last time I saw him I knew he wouldn't vote for Obama, but I wonder if this race would have changed his mind.

He was a blue dog Democrat...couldn't stand Reagan from the start.

25. Sorry for your loss.
I don't know anyone whose beliefs haven't been challenged in some way during this election.
My dad is the kind of racist who is fairly comfortable judging someone by skin color, but once he gets to know that person, he's just as comfortable judging them as an individual... so for example, he likes Obama but doesn't consider Obama to be African American.
Baby steps I guess.

17. She sounds like my late mother-in-law.
We lost Ma in July at the age of 97. Her racist comments made me cringe but she was a diehard Democrat. Her nickname for Dick Cheney was Meatball. According to her he looked like he had a meatball in his mouth when he spoke.

She thinks if Palin is elected, it's Armageddon time!

23. your Nona sounds like my mom --
96% wonderful, 4% cringeworthy racist -- I completely 'get' your description of your Nona. But my mom, too, was totally turned off by Palin.

She's not so much a republican, as she would have had a hard time voting for a black man. Not all racists are republican. But no more. Her early voting ballot has already been sent in, and she grills me every day: "You're voting for Obama, right??" To which I gently remind her that yes, I am voting for Obama.

24. Grandpa in Ohio's not cured, but McCain won't be getting his vote :)
Obama supporters and Hillary supporters both offered Grandma & Grandpa rides and help to vote in the primaries, and they went for Hillary because he would never vote for <racial tirade>

Obama supporters have offered help this time, too... not caring who they would vote for, but Grandpa doesn't think it would be right to go with them and vote for McCain. Repubs up there haven't learned to reach out to voters with practical help... all they get is robo-calls... So- Grandpa and his wife say they aren't voting.

Not perfect news but at least 2 McCain votes that won't happen!
