NC lawmaker: Comment on liberals came out wrong

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Republican Rep. Robin Hayes said Tuesday he did not recall telling voters at a John McCain rally that "liberals hate real Americans," but after reading his remarks, said they came out the wrong way.
The 63-year-old Hayes spoke on Saturday in Concord before the Republican presidential nominee's appearance, and told the crowd: "Liberals hate real Americans that work and accomplish and achieve and believe in God."
Questioned about his comments, Hayes said in a prepared statement: "I genuinely did not recall making the statement and, after reading it, there is no doubt that it came out completely the wrong way."
Hayes, a five-term lawmaker, faces a challenge from Democrat Larry Kissell, who almost beat him in 2006 in a swing district in south-central North Carolina.
Oddly, Hayes spoke earlier in his brief speech about the notes he had prepared, saying, "One of the things we need to do is to be certain we don't say something stupid."
