“Yesterday I made my first vote. Now, today, I am a real citizen.”
Those words were spoken to me this morning by a mechanic who works in the auto repair shop where I take my car. He’s an Argentinean immigrant who recently got his citizenship papers, and the shop owner gave him time off yesterday to go vote early.

I’ve spoken with him before and I know he registered as a Democrat. And this makes me resent, all the more, the lies, filth and hatred that the Republicans have thrown at us. This is a man who, as a teenager, has seen a dictatorship up close and personal. And he often fears that it may have “followed” him here.

I wish that everyone here could sit down and talk with him for a while. People like Limbaugh, McCain, Palin, and that female congress creature from Minnesota who was talking about “real Americans” or some such crap, would make you embarrassed for our country.

The pride in this man’s voice, and the fact that he wanted to cast a vote on the very first day possible, brought tears to my eyes and I turned away so he couldn't see them. If only the wingnuts in our country understood freedom and democracy the way this man does.
