Obama's playing it like Jackie Robinson...
Calm, cool collected...

It took Jackie a couple of games to get started...

A couple of stolen plays and turned double plays to win over his team mates...

A pennant and MVP award to win over the Country...

1. Why do black people have to always play it docile and meek? Why can't black people
be judged as simple human beings who have emotions just like everyone else? Obama shouldn't have to play it like Jackie Robinson in TWO THOUSAND FUCKING EIGHT!

*throws papers across the desk*

7. In case you hadn't heard, there is a lot of racial crap going through
the country right now.

Granted, it is a lot more covert than in Robinson's time, but it is still there and the whole reason I brought it up is Obama is playing it cool, just like Robinson did.

Not letting any of it take away from his game plan.

24. Thank Goodness someone noticed about the issue regarding emotions.
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 12:26 AM by political_Dem
I imagine how people would be if they ever saw Obama angry. Do they even know how stressful it is trying to keep one's emotions in check so it doesn't appear "menacing" and "scary".

It gets tiring.

6. Jackie took a whole lot more shit than Sen. Obama's had to take.
In college.
In the army.
In baseball.
In housing.

19. You see I'm a baseball fan and I think it does play well...
So you have your opinion and I have mine...

And I think Obama would love to be compared to Jackie Robinson.

13. for the naysayers:
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 12:14 AM by islandmkl
baseball being the 'American game' and all...it still wasn't so engrossing that even half of the country paid close attention...

i would say that barack has about 50 - you pick a number - MILLION people that not only won't vote for him, including a large percentage that actually either HATE or FEAR him....

because, like Jackie and Ali and Martin and nearly every person who has had to step up into the limelight to try to make a big difference in the way we conduct our daily business in this 'democracy' and have been chastised, persecuted, scorned and, many times, physically harmed...

he is black...

yeah, we've come a long way...like the guy said to me at the Obama tampa rally when i asked him if he thought he would live to see this day: "I didn't think my grandkids would live to see this day."

in reflection, a bittersweet comment...we both know we aren't there, yet...

16. Baseball was THE sport back then....
There was nothing else outside of College football that even came close.

Almost every town had an organized baseball team competing in some sort of league against surrounding towns.

25. It's just that a lot of the racists then and now expected something different
And when Robinson just came to play baseball, he won over a whole bunch of people.

There is a great novel about that year by Pete Hamill.

I think there were a lot of skeptical people when Obama first came on the scene.

He played it cool, just ran as a progressive democrat and won the day.
