8. 3.1415926527 + an "E"???
Edited on Mon Oct-20-08 10:21 PM by ddeclue
Did you know that the fraction 355/113 approximates the value of PI to 6+ decimal places and is accurate to nearly one part in 12 million?

It's also cool because it is easy to remember as 11 3/3 55 and you can use it if you were stuck on the proverbial "desert island" without needing anything else but simple long division.

30. OK. Find X if (X+1) = (1/X). You can do it.
To the nearest 1/1000th will do.

I'm waiting...

Let me know if you give up....

31. This is simply a disguised quadratic...multiplying both sides by x yields:
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 12:23 AM by ddeclue
x^2+x=1

x^2+x-1=0

according to the quadratic equation:

-b+/-sqrt(b*b-4*a*c)/2a

where a=1, b=1 and c=-1 yields:

-1+/-sqrt(1*1-4*1*-1)
=-1+/-sqrt(1+4)=-1+/-sqrt(5)

sqrt(5) approximateley 2.236

this gives 1.236/2=.618 and -3.236/2=-1.618

I have a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering and was doing problems like this in eighth grade.

34. Ohh, you showed your work!
Good job!

I worked it out years ago the hard way after I saw a diagram of a golden rectangle, constructing the equation based on the diagram.

You can see from the diagram how the equation applies. If B-F is 1.0, then F-C is 0.6180339...

Not sure what grade I was in.

35. Ah yes but the "golden rectangle" doesn't offer up the negative solution
so it's only half credit for the solution. Got to get both possibilities...

Of course as an architorture student, you probably weren't too concerned about buildings with negative dimensions however...

:)

27. But remember..
until November 1, do not eat the RED pies. Those are for the REEL Americans. No cherry. No strawberry. No rhubarb. No combinations thereof. (Note that for these purposes, tomatoes are orange, so pizza remains available.)
