The first President and First Family my daughters will remember...
Edited on Mon Oct-20-08 01:22 PM by RedSpartan
I've been a member here a long time, but haven't really posted much until recently. Anyway, for my 500th post, I wanted to share something I've been thinking about.

I'm 31, born in 1977. The first president I remember is Reagan.

I have two daughters. My oldest is almost four, my youngest is almost one.

The first president they will remember will be Barack Obama.

And this is the first First Family they will remember:

The importance of that, for the positive influence it can and will have on those not yet old enough to vote, and for how it will help to crush prejudices and preconceptions before the right wing tries to indoctrinate them in young minds, cannot be overstated.

Change is coming November 4th. In every sense of the word.

3. My two daughters are the same age
as the Obama's daughters. My 7-year-old is so excited about Obama becoming president. I can't tell you how many times she has said to me, "Mommy, if we met the Obamas, do you think we would be friends? Do you think their daughters would like me?" I would so love to see a color-blind country, and this could be one great step in the right direction.

5. My 7 year old has a good friend who looks just like Obama's oldest
and she is so excited to have someone like her in the white house.

4. Lets hope

I have an 11 year old son who is very engaged politically. I tell him to 'don't worry about politics', just be a kid and let the adults worry, that he'll get his chance one day.

That said, I can't help but think (if) Obama wins, we need to be there for the inaguration...He (and my daughter of 6) deserve a chance to witness history, even if they don't quite 'get it' yet.

6. I hear you!
My two daughters are about the same ages as the Obamas' girls, 11 and 6, and both girls of color too. I'm thrilled that Obama will be their first Democratic president and the first president that they will take note of in a major way, mostly because I'm talking about the election with them constantly.

7. Lucky you! My 8yo daughter
has had to live her entire life under a * pResidency. She's an ardent Obama supporter now.

Congrats on reaching 500 - my goal is 1000 by election day.

9. I was born in 1960 and the first I remember is Johnson.
I just remember how old he seemed on TV, but also very big, scary and ultimately, very impressive. The first election I voted for President for was, of course, 1980 and it took me twelve years to vote for someone that won. My daughter will cast her first ballot proudly for Obama, and that's kind of special for me.

You make a great point about your children, they may well know a world vastly different from any we can imagine and with Obama, that can be a better world.
