Barack Obama has opened his biggest lead yet over John McCain in Virginia. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state finds Obama now leading 54% to 44%. The Democrat leads 51% to 48% among men and 57% to 42% among women (see full demographic crosstabs).

Just one week ago, Obama held a three percentage point lead but Obama has been dramatically outspending McCain on television advertising in this critical state. The Democrat has now been ahead of McCain in five straight Virginia polls conducted by Rasmussen Reports.

Obama is viewed favorably by 59% of Virginia voters and unfavorably by 40%. McCain’s numbers are 55% favorable, 44% unfavorable.

3. McCain will not win without VA. And this is the forth pollster who has shown a double-digits lead.

Looks like the "real" Virginia will win the election for Obama.

6. I think it's time for the news organizations to make Virginia blue on their maps.

7. Makes no sense

This other thread says the overall race is getting tighter, but VA (a red state) is tracking 10 for Obama?

Did the other poll only sample people in Alabama?

10. That is why the national poll is completely worthless

We are now in a state by state battle and Obama isn't spending money in Alabama or Utah so his numbers will decline in those areas. In the meantime in his critical 17 states he is pumping in millions of dollars and fighting like hell and his numbers continue to go up.

If the national numbers 'tighten' it doesn't mean that McCain will pick up a single EV, indeed it is entirely possible that the race tightens and Obama increases his EV spread.
