Gingrich: "Powell Eliminated the Experience Argument in One Sound Bite & Obama Effect is Real"
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 02:03 PM by K Gardner
http://www.abcnews.go.com/ThisWeek/story?id=6066689&page=1

Former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich reacted this morning to Colin Powell's endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., arguing, "What that just did in one sound bite... is it eliminated the experience argument."

In all-star roundtable edition of "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," former presidential adviser David Gergen categorized Powell's announcement as "the most important endorsement of the campaign so far."

Tom Friedman of The New York Times agreed, explaining, "Gen. Powell helps a lot, I think, especially at this moment, you know. That's a real affirmation that the country can trust Barack Obama as commander in chief, and Colin Powell still has a lot of cred with Republicans and Democrats."

<snip>

Gingrich agreed that "there is a racial effect on both sides, that African-Americans will disproportionately turn out and they will disproportionately vote for Obama, and they have disproportionately registered for a good reason. The Obama effect is real and legitimate. It's authentic."

1. Whoa! That's ALMOST an endorsement right there......
..... or at least as close as Gingrich would ever get.

6. They're both fairly stunning statements. Funny, given that Morning Ho cites Newt as his Savior each
morning. We'll see how that goes tomorrow, LOL.

11. There have been 214,000 early voters in NC in 2 days, 64% Democrats
What is real evidence of the Obama effect is that 36% of them were black. Given that NC's black population is 22%, I'd say that black voter turnout will be a large factor.

Overall turnout looks like it is going to be massive.

Young and old, black and white, there is a rising tide of enthusiastic Democrats and independent voters who are going to make the margins large enough that the the republicans may not be able to steal this election.

They will try.

7. I turned it on for a second just as he was saying that
and George Will replied "I think the experience arguement was destroyed during the financial crisis when one candidate acted all in a flurry, and the other one didn't" (I turned the channel before I heard the rest, so I didn't hear the supposedly offensive thing that Will said next, debated on the other thread). Also, the experience arguement went to shit with Palin.

13. OBAMA eliminated the experience argument about a year ago IMO.
But I also realize that Powell wasn't really speaking to us.

20. I agree that it is pretty amazing that even with many generals and admirals supporting Obama,
this particular endorsement convinces them so much more.

14. Get-rich forgets that McKKKlan negated "experience" when he picked Mooselini.
Getrich was a turd, is still a turd, and will always be a turd.

What Powell did, not only with his endorsement, but his presser afterwards, was throw down the gauntlet at the repuke party... Something that the chickenshit pundits who actually would agree with him like Noonan, Will, Krauthammer, Kristol, Frum, and Brooks, have danced around the edges to do. Even Buckley sacrificed his position atop his father's creation to call them out and that act of sacrifice was quickly shoved out of the spotlight.
