"Colin Powell denounces McCain campaign and Republican Party ....
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 10:05 AM by mzmolly
for a narrow minded, bigoted approach to election. Oh, and he also endorsed Barack Obama." That's my headline. ;)

The Powell endorsement was not only important because Powell said he's voting for Barack Obama. It's also important because he put the Republican Party in it's place for appealing to the worst of humanity. He shone the spotlight on the elephant in the outhouse, and for that I thank him.

:toast: to the General.

3. great post from Ballon Juice
1. Colin Powell endorsing Obama – $10
2. Sarah Palin being too stupid to realize she was being mocked on SNL last night – $25
3. Obama raising $150M last month – $50

Colin Powell chucking the McCain campaign under the bus, running over them, backing up and running over them again – PRICELESS!!

4. To be honest, Powell sounded more like a Democrat during
that interview. First time I've ever heard a Repub worry about more right wingers on SCOTUS.

5. I'm don't think that he quite denounced McCain
He said that he was a long time friend of McCain and that he was disapointed in the direction his campaign had taken. But he also said that both could be (notice the could instead of would)be great Presidents. And he didn't exactly denounce the republican party, he said that he didn't like the move to the right they were taking. He was definitely not complimentary of either McCain or the repub party, but I don't think that he quite denounced them.

He was, however, quite compimentary of Obama. And I thought his reasoning was impeccable. The reasons Powell laid out were the best part of his statement.

6. "denounce"
Per dictionary.com

1. to condemn or censure openly or publicly: to denounce a politician as morally corrupt.
2. to make a formal accusation against, as to the police or in a court.
3. to give formal notice of the termination or denial of (a treaty, pact, agreement, or the like).
4. Archaic. to announce or proclaim, esp. as something evil or calamitous.
5. Obsolete. to portend.

I'm fine with my characterization of what Powell said and did. :hi:

Also, he said "good" Presidents not "great" IIRC?

9. Could be good and not great, I'm not sure now
I just didn't take it as strongly a rejection as you did.

Just a discussion point. My take was he couldn't quite go as strong as denounce. He did call it "his" party. :hi:

But it was a great speech for Obama.
