Yes We Canned...... How about a food drive for voting day?
Go vote... then drop off some much needed donations to your local food bank. With the economy the way it is, food banks supplies are getting scarce. We could take some of this enthusiasm for our candidate to also help those in need, especially with the holidays coming up.

Who's in?

1. I am not in favor of something that would suggest to the
rabid right that they could bring canned goods to polling places, although I have never had a good throwing arm, which may color my judgment.

2. Didn't mention bringing food to the voting area...just drop it off at a local food bank that day.
It wouldn't have to be limited to Obama voters either but I doubt if McCain supporters will be in a good enough mood that day to help others. ; )

3. My polling place is a church. My church in fact - and I'm stealing this idea.
I am going to organize a food drive for election day just outside of polling places. If it rains a 10X10 easy up gazebo will do just fine. The Board of elections has approved civic minded actions at polling places before just so long as they in no way encourage a vote one way or the other. A food drive would be perfect since it's absolutely non partisan.

With the Obama organizational abilities this should be a piece of cake people.

4. Mine is a church also ~~ great idea! You go girl!
I'm in a town of around 5,000 in the south. We do have an excellent community organization with a food bank which I've had to use once or twice. I'll write a Letter to the Editor urging donations no matter your political leaning on election day!

We can help our nation with our vote and our ones in need with our actions in donating food! Yes we can be the America we wish U.S. to be!

7. If you write a LTTE, encourage GOP voters to donate too. Would "Feed your neighbors first"
be a good phrase to use, a takeoff on the 'country first' one? Any better suggestions?

Encourage kindness in your letters! Americans are tired of mean.

10. Obama and Biden should do this at their remaining rallies.
Just ask people to bring a can or box of food to be given out to the local food banks where the event is held. That would bring in hundreds of thousands of items to help the needy.

15. I found a CNN commentary along the same vein:
Food banks instead of campaign ads:

snip:

So, Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain, how about instead of spending that $30 million a week kicking the "you know what" out of each other between now and Election Day, you pool your money and you give it to that food bank in Provo, Utah, so Joalaina Redbird's kids can get three square meals a day until her husband finds another job?

unsnip

18. Hmmmmm What about voting then dropping cans off at Dem Headquarters?
Then your local headquarters could have the publicity of the donation? Maybe Obama could ask everyone voting for him to drop off a can at his local offices? Maybe we could count the cans for an unofficial exit poll?
