i think we should also point out that a lot of republicans aren't voting for him also ie log cabin republicans and republicans for choice because of him alienating their issues on his platform.

P.S.--My mother was an alcoholic who didn't get treatment and it killed her.

Which convinced many that "going after the middle" by becoming more republican is a workable strategy despite the losses since.
